1999 Packard Twelve Concept

If you’re roughly my age—let’s say five decades into this whole life process—you’ve seen a fair number of automobile brands fade into the sunset.

I was probably most impacted by the demise of Pontiac, but I remember feeling a twinge of sadness at the deaths of AMC, Mercury, Oldsmobile, Plymouth, and—no kidding—Checker.

Where would you live if you could commute each workday in an autonomous-driving, fully-functional, connected, comfortable, mobile office space? What if the service was provided via an on-demand subscription basis? Or, what if it was provided by one employer but not another – which company would you work for?

The wonderful thing about bad movies, especially bad action/adventure movies, is that they are often redeemed (at least partially) by something utterly absurd.

New York Auto ShowAt the 2018 New York Auto Show, Volkswagen introduced the Atlas Tanoak Concept, a unibody-pickup concept vehicle that, were it to be offered as a production model, would slot nicely into the hot North American midsize truck segment.

The Atlas Tanoak Concept (Tanoak is a variety of oak tree common in coastal California) is designed around VW’s MQB modular architecture, which accommodates a range of vehicles, including the Golf compact car and Atlas midsize crossover.

The words to that famous song seem to be the backdrop for the 2018 Chicago Auto Show, and if the forecasted 20 inches of the white stuff materializes, Nissan is ready.

Pontiac Sunfire Concept

Pontiac Sunfire Concept

The very last Pontiacs were sold as 2010 models, though production of all Pontiac models had ceased by late 2009. The demise of General Motors’ “performance division” was certainly a sad affair, but truth be told, the brand had become largely unrecognizable to many marque enthusiasts. With a largely alphanumeric naming scheme and an intentionally toned-down design theme meant to attract Japanese-car intenders, the Pontiac of the 21st century bore little resemblance to the nameplate once known for Wide Track design and the GTO.
