Chevrolet celebrated the Camaro’s 50th anniversary in 2017. There was a commemorative model with special trim, but here we’re more interested in the latest high-performance ZL1 as a possible future collectible.

The second-generation Ford Fusion made its debut as a 2013 model, and the midsize sedan received some significant updates for 2017. Most Fusion models cater to a practical and mainstream market, while the Hybrid and Energi plug-in models target efficiency seekers. Now, though, Ford has added something for those looking for more speed and a bit more excitement than run-of-the-mill sedans offer: the Fusion Sport.

In 2014 BMW replaced the 1-Series as its premium subcompact in America.  The new holder of that job was the 2-Series. The basic idea here was a coupe or convertible with four seats and rear drive. There were two subseries, the 228i with a turbocharged four and the M235i with a 320-bhp turbocharged inline six.

Mercury, and the Grand Marquis, left the automotive scene in January 2011. That final Grand Marquis was a direct evolution of the 1979 Marquis built on the “Panther” platform that was Ford Motor Company’s response to General Motors’s downsized 1977 large cars. Consider for a moment that Panther’s run of 33 model years remarkably covered nearly half the history of Mercury itself. Over time exterior styling evolved but this body-on-frame Merc’s basic specifications remained amazingly consistent.

2017 Dodge Viper

Note: The following story was excerpted from the June 2017 issue of Collectible Automobile magazine.

When the production version of the original Dodge Viper RT/10 was introduced for the 1992 model year, it really was like nothing else. Sure, Carroll Shelby’s legendary Sixties-era Ford-powered Cobras provided inspiration, but Viper’s in-your-face, all-American design and 400-hp V-10 engine captured the public’s imagination.

Back in the Sixties and Seventies, buyers in the market for a small sporty roadster had quite a few choices. Sure, they were mostly British or Italian, but there were choices. Heck, even a decade or so ago, Americans had several reasonably affordable two-seat drop tops to shop. Remember the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky?

2017 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible

by Don Sikora II

Note: The following story was excerpted from the February 2017 issue of Collectible Automobile magazine.

At first glance, the 2017 Range Rover Evoque convertible is an unlikely new offering from the British brand best known for classy sport-utility wagons that can go darn near anywhere. I must admit my early thoughts when hearing about the soft-top Evoque included visions of the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet—which answered a question no one was asking—and a colorfully worded version of “what are they thinking?”

When the Cadillac CTS-V made its debut in 2004, the idea of a finely honed high-performance Cadillac sedan was pretty audacious. Now, little more than a decade later, racy Cadillacs are accepted, perhaps even expected, by driving enthusiasts.

Jeep introduced its original go-fast Grand Cherokee SRT8 for the 2006 model year. Powered by a 420-hp 6.1-liter Hemi V-8, it was available through 2010.

2015 Alfa Romeo 4C

Note: The following story was excerpted from the August 2016 issue of Collectible Automobile magazine.

Alfa Romeo’s long-promised return to the American market has seemingly been in the works since imports of the 164 sedan ended in 1995. Less than 10 years ago, Maserati dealers sold Americans about 100 $250,000-plus Alfa 8Cs. But more attainable models were only promised, not delivered. Finally, after countless delays, the first examples of the Alfa Romeo 4C hit the company’s small network of Stateside dealers in late 2014.
