Back in the Sixties and Seventies, buyers in the market for a small sporty roadster had quite a few choices. Sure, they were mostly British or Italian, but there were choices. Heck, even a decade or so ago, Americans had several reasonably affordable two-seat drop tops to shop. Remember the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky?

2017 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque Convertible

by Don Sikora II

Note: The following story was excerpted from the February 2017 issue of Collectible Automobile magazine.

At first glance, the 2017 Range Rover Evoque convertible is an unlikely new offering from the British brand best known for classy sport-utility wagons that can go darn near anywhere. I must admit my early thoughts when hearing about the soft-top Evoque included visions of the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet—which answered a question no one was asking—and a colorfully worded version of “what are they thinking?”

When the Cadillac CTS-V made its debut in 2004, the idea of a finely honed high-performance Cadillac sedan was pretty audacious. Now, little more than a decade later, racy Cadillacs are accepted, perhaps even expected, by driving enthusiasts.

2015 Alfa Romeo 4C

Note: The following story was excerpted from the August 2016 issue of Collectible Automobile magazine.

Alfa Romeo’s long-promised return to the American market has seemingly been in the works since imports of the 164 sedan ended in 1995. Less than 10 years ago, Maserati dealers sold Americans about 100 $250,000-plus Alfa 8Cs. But more attainable models were only promised, not delivered. Finally, after countless delays, the first examples of the Alfa Romeo 4C hit the company’s small network of Stateside dealers in late 2014.

2016 Ford Focus RS

Note: The following story was excerpted from the June 2016 issue of Collectible Automobile magazine.

Arguably one of the most anticipated new performance cars of 2016 is a Ford Focus. Yes, a Focus. No, we aren’t forgetting the upcoming Ford GT. But it’s not just any old Focus we’re talking about here—it’s the third-generation Focus RS.

2014 Chevrolet SS

Note: The following story was excerpted from the April 2016 issue of Collectible Automobile magazine.

When considering the 2014-16 Chevrolet SS as a future collectible, it’s impossible to ignore the one-year-and-out 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP that we looked at back in the October 2010 issue of Collectible Automobile. Killed off like all Pontiacs in the wake of General Motors’s 2009 bankruptcy filing, the 415-horsepower GXP was the highest-performance variant of Pontiac’s new-for-2008 G8 based on GM’s Holden Commodore VE from Australia.

2015-16 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat

2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat

By Don Sikora IICollectible Automobile Magazine

Note: The following story was excerpted from the February 2016 issue of Collectible Automobile magazine.

It’s pretty safe to say that Dodge’s 707-bhp supercharged “Hellcat” Hemi V-8 generated considerable excitement when it was introduced in the 2015 Challenger SRT Hellcat. While the two-door came first and dominated the headlines, remember Dodge soon after plopped those 707 ponies into the Challenger’s slightly larger four-door sibling to create the Charger SRT Hellcat. Could collectors find the more-door Hellcat the more desirable of the two?

2011 Ram 1500 Tradesman Hemi

Luxuriously equipped and extravagantly priced ½-ton pickups are common today, but a back-to-basics workaday hauler still has its charms. Among modern-day work trucks, the 2011-15 Ram 1500 Tradesman has the intriguing distinction of being able to pack a near-400-bhp Hemi V-8 engine at a bargain price.

2015 Ford Mustang 50 Year Limited Edition

By Don Sikora IICollectible Automobile Magazine

Note: The following story was excerpted from the October 2015 issue of Collectible Automobile magazine.

It may be the pride of Dearborn, Michigan, but the Ford Mustang has strong bonds to New York City. The original Mustang bowed there on April 17, 1964, at the World’s Fair. Almost exactly a half-century later, Ford announced the 50 Year Limited Edition version of the all-new sixth-generation 2015 Mustang at the 2014 New York Auto Show.
