Thanks to easy access to ridesharing services such as Uber, Lyft, and Wingz, many urban dwellers have found that they can live free of the complications and costs of car ownership. On the occasion that short-hop transportation is needed, these car-free bon vivants turn to a smartphone app and order up a quick ride. Other times, public transportation suffices.
DETROIT—Kia kicked off the fourth generation of its mainstream compact car with the unveiling of the 2019 Forte at the 2018 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The new Forte gets fresh styling on a slightly larger platform, an all-new powertrain, new driver assistance features, and estimated fuel economy of up to 35 mpg combined.

No, not the 1990s, with its mullet haircuts, punk-rock videos, and 50 shades of teal. Rather, it was the 90-mile range estimates on our Kia Soul EV.

One of the downsides of electric cars — as noted in our previous Kia Soul EV long-term update — is that cold weather really cuts into the driving range. That’s likely due in part to the battery being less efficient in cold temperatures, and certainly to the fact that creating heat from electricity is an extremely inefficient endeavor.
According to the calendar, spring has officially arrived, and we can consign the winter of 2016-17 to the history books. Aside from one early March blast of snowy weather, our Chicagoland stomping grounds got off pretty easy in terms of frozen precipitation this season—but we still had our fair share of days where the thermometer didn’t get above single digits. Since the bone-chilling temperatures and snowstorms are (hopefully) in our rearview mirror now, it’s a good time to review our winter testing experience with our long-term Kia Soul EV.
