2019 Honda Passport

LA-Auto-Show-LogoHonda has the compact SUV class capably covered with its CR-V, and its Pilot SUV is a solid competitor in the three-row midsize SUV category. However, two-row, five-passenger SUVs are also a very popular market segment, and Honda didn’t have a product offering there to compete directly against rivals such as the Ford Edge and the just-redesigned Hyundai Santa Fe. That changes with the introduction of the 2019 Honda Passport, which is being unveiled at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show.

2019 Subaru Crosstrek Plug-in Hybrid

2019 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid

LA-Auto-Show-LogoSubaru’s first plug-in hybrid will be making its public debut at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show. Based on the Crosstrek compact crossover that was redesigned last year, the Hybrid (Subaru doesn’t include “Plug-In” in the official name, but it does on the car’s badges) pairs a 2.0-liter flat-four engine with two electric motors. One of the motors is used to start the engine at stops and as a generator to recharge the lithium-ion battery, the other to help power the car and charge the battery under braking. As with the “regular” Crosstrek, the Hybrid comes standard with all-wheel drive, making it one of the few all-wheel-drive hybrids — and one of the least-expensive AWD plug-in hybrids — on the market.

Consumer Guide Automotive If you haven’t noticed, compact crossovers are all the rage nowadays. That applies to premium ones as well, and increasingly, to premium ones that have been downsized to near subcompact proportions. And that’s the game Lexus has entered with the new UX.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Orvis Edition

by Don Sikora

Note: The following story was excerpted from the April 2018 issue of Collectible Automobile magazine.

Jeep’s compact Cherokee and Wagoneer proved popular after their debuts for 1984, and parent AMC was already working on a larger replacement when Chrysler bought the company in 1987. Chrysler had other priorities, so it took until the 1993 model year for the replacement to go on sale. At that point the decision was made to keep the old type in production and position the new vehicle upmarket as the Grand Cherokee and Grand Wagoneer.

2005 Pontiac Aztek

I’m not quite prepared to suggest that Pontiac’s Aztek crossover would have sold well if it had been launched as a 2018 model, but I am willing to propose that it might have been better received in today’s marketplace than it was when it debuted back in 2001.

2019 Cadillac XT4

2019 Cadillac XT4

Consumer Guide Automotive

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of Cadillac’s newly introduced compact crossover is that … it took so long to get here.

For a market that is essentially 15 years old, has long contained more than a dozen entries, and is growing in popularity at an incredibly rapid rate, Cadillac seems kind of late to the party. But they’ve finally arrived for 2019 bearing a pretty darn nice gift: the impressive new XT4.
