CES

Stellantis’ Ram truck division showcased a concept vehicle at the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show that will pave the way for the brand’s own entry into the fully electric pickup space. Dubbed the “1500 Revolution BEV,” this rig boasts several novel features that could help it stand out from its Ford and General Motors rivals.

The concept’s styling has a “familiar but fresh” look to it. The front end is unmistakably Ram, but it’s been updated to reflect 2020s design direction. From the A-pillar back, the look is a bit more non-descript. There’s nothing at all wrong here, but it might have been nice to see the stylists take more of a risk.

The Revolution BEV’s features and tech are the stars, though. The powered midgate has a removable lower section that can allow objects up to 18-feet long to to fit in the bed, through the cabin via a removable center console, and into the front trunk. The midgate can also be configured into a third-row jump seat. The central infotainment screen is split into two displays offering up to 28 inches of viewable real estate with a top section that can be removed and used as its own tablet. The head-up display uses augmented reality (AR) to assist drivers in seeing objects that could be out of their normal field of view.

Embedded within the vehicle is a “personal assistant” that can respond to voice commands, including the innovative new “Shadow Mode.” This system utilizes the truck’s built-in radar and cameras to follow someone who is walking ahead of it. It can even navigate around obstacles. Stellantis claims Shadow Mode would be useful for a construction worker to navigate around a jobsite to pick up tools without needing to get in and out of the truck. The truck even integrates smart home controls and can be used in conjunction with an AR app to help owners visualize how some objects will fit into it.

CES 2022: 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV

Drivetrain and estimated range were not given, but the Revolution BEV will support 800-volt DC fast charging at up to 350 kW, which should provide up to 100 miles of driving range in 10 minutes. The company also showed off an autonomous inductive charger. When the truck is parked, the inductive pad will sense it and slide/align itself under the vehicle to top off the battery. To improve maneuverability, the rear wheels will be able to steer up to 15 degrees.

While the Ram 1500 Revolution BEV is just a concept, expect many of its design elements and tech features to make it into the final production vehicle, which is slated to go on sale in calendar 2024. Pricing will be announced closer to the on-sale date, but expect it to be in the same ballpark as the Chevrolet Silverado EV, Ford F-150 Lighting, and GMC Sierra EV.

CG Says:

The gas-powered Ram 1500 has been a Consumer Guide favorite for well over a decade thanks to its peerless blend of style, features, capability, and refinement. The Revolution BEV looks like it will build upon this impressive foundation while blazing a trail all its own thanks to features like Shadow Mode that we hope make it into the final product. We can’t wait to see what it can do.
