2017 Detroit Auto ShowDETROIT—Chevrolet introduced the new generation of its Traverse midsize SUV at the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The 2018 Traverse has a longer wheelbase than the outgoing model for improved passenger room—especially in the third row—and maximum cargo room is likewise upgraded (to 98.5 cubic feet).

The previous Traverse’s “Smart Slide” second-row seat is improved as well; the curbside seat can now tip up and slide forward, even with a forward-facing child seat installed, to provide easier third-row access.

Two new trim levels join the roster this year: the sporty RS and upscale High Country. The RS includes blacked-out exterior trim, a black chrome grille with black bowtie, 20-inch wheels, and other unique features. The High Country’s luxury touches include leather upholstery with suede accents, unique badging, D-Optic LED headlights, power-folding third-row seats, and polished 20-inch wheels. Also standard on the High Country is an advanced twin-clutch AWD system.

A 305-hp 3.6-liter V6 paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission will be standard on all Traverses save for the RS model, which is powered by a 255-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with a 9-speed automatic. (Both horsepower figures are GM-estimated.)

The available hands-free power liftgate has a Chevrolet bowtie-logo lamp that illuminates the ground where drivers need to place a foot to operate the liftgate. Other convenience features include available wireless device charging and USB ports in all three seating rows.

Available safety features include a Surround Vision camera, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Front Pedestrian Braking, Forward Collision Alert, Low and High-Speed Forward Automatic Braking, and GM’s Teen Driver monitoring system and Rear Seat Reminder feature.

The 2018 Chevrolet Traverse is slated to hit dealerships in the fall of 2017.

CG Says:

Unlike the downsized-for-2017 GMC Acadia, the Chevrolet Traverse gets a bit larger for 2018. The new Traverse’s upsized proportions, fresh styling, and new features should help it do battle against the likes of the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander. The new RS and High Country models seem like logical extensions of the lineup, though we’re a bit perplexed by the decision to offer the RS solely with the less powerful four-cylinder engine. Also, note that Chevrolet will likely introduce another SUV in the near future that fills the gap between the downsized-for-2018 Equinox and the Traverse.
