The Outback has been one of Subaru’s greatest success stories, long being the make’s best-selling model. Changes for the 2018 version shown at the New York Auto Show focus mostly on mild styling tweaks and additional features.

A freshened “face” incorporates what Subaru says is a “bolder, more rugged look” with a wider lower-grille opening and revised bumper and fascia.

Equipment additions extend to adaptive headlights with automatic high beams, a paddle-shifted manual mode for the CVT automatic transmission, and driver-selectable X-Mode that adjusts transmission ratio and activates Hill Descent Control in off-road situations. Also newly available are individual tire-pressure readouts and vehicle guidelines (which adjust with the steering) for the standard rearview camera.

The 2018 Subaru Outback is due on sale this summer.

CG Says:

Subaru argues that the Outback was instrumental in starting today’s crossover craze 20 years ago, and it has always appealed as a more carlike alternative to traditional midsize SUVs. It’s clearly a concept that has proved attractive, and additions for 2018 make it even more so.
