2022 Los Angeles Auto ShowRevealed today at the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show, the redesigned 2024 Subaru Impreza is noteworthy for what it gains, and for what it loses. Gone is an available manual transmission, and more significantly a sedan variant. Returning for ’24 is the sporty RS trim level. An RS version of the Impreza was last offered in 2007.

Mechanically similar to the Crosstrek small crossover, the Impreza shares that popular Subaru’s basic architecture and powertrain options, but is considered a car, and thus rides lower to the ground, and is not marketed with the pretense of off-road capability. For 2024, only a 4-door hatchback will be offered.

The new Impreza features updated exterior and interior styling, and an enhanced EyeSight safety and driver-assistance system.

The 2024 Impreza will be available in three trim levels: base, Sport, and the aforementioned RS. Base and Sport Imprezas are powered by a 152-horsepower 2.0-liter engine. Exclusive to the RS is a 182-horse 2.5-liter powerplant. The ’24 Impreza comes only with a CVT-automatic transmission. And, like all Subarus except the BRZ sports car, the Impreza will come with standard AWD.

The new Impreza is expected in showrooms this Spring.

CG Says:

We’re bummed about the sedan, but there’s nothing like the functional utility of a small, well-sorted hatchback. We’re going to miss the manual transmission, but Subaru isn’t the only car brand doing away with stick shift. If the new Impreza is anything like the last, it’s going to be reasonably fun to drive, and an affordable way for consumers to get into an AWD vehicle. For those of us in the Snowbelt, that’s a pretty big deal.
