2023 Jeep Avenger 1st Edition
At the 2022 Paris Auto Show, Jeep unveiled its first fully electric vehicle, the 2023 Avenger. This subcompact-class crossover slots below the Renegade in size and at least for now, will not be sold in North America.
If the Avenger name sounds familiar, that’s because it was previously used by Jeep-parent Stellantis’ Dodge brand, first on a sporty coupe produced from 1994-2000 and then later on a midsize sedan that was made between 2007-2014.

It’s no secret: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the related supply-chain issues, new-vehicle transaction prices have shot upward over the last couple years. Stories of jaw-dropping dealer markups—especially for popular vehicles—are now commonplace… so much so that some sort of markup on a new vehicle is more or less the rule, rather than the exception. On a recent Sunday road trip through Western Illinois, I came across a small-town Dodge-Chrysler-Jeep-Ram dealership with a few brand-new vehicles on its lot, so I decided to do a little boots-on-the-ground research. What I found was this: This particular dealer is asking full sticker, full sticker plus $5000, or full sticker plus $10,000 for the new vehicles it has in inventory. And, there isn’t very much in inventory.

There’s no moss growing under the feet of Jeep engineers and product planners these days. About a year ago, the brand introduced its first plug-in-hybrid vehicle: the Wrangler 4xe. Approximately 30,000 units found buyers last year, which Jeep says makes the Wrangler 4xe (pronounced “four by e”) America’s best-selling plug-in hybrid. Last summer, the fifth generation of Jeep’s Grand Cherokee debuted with the all-new 2021 Grand Cherokee L—the first Grand Cherokee with three rows of seats. Late last year, a redesign of the traditional two-row, five-passenger Grand Cherokee was introduced on a shorter version of the L’s all-new unibody platform. That’s all history now—along with the equally new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer full-size SUVs—and Jeep’s engineers are on to their next act: the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe. It’s an intriguing mix-and-match that combines the Wrangler 4xe’s powerful plug-in-hybrid powertrain with the redesigned Grand Cherokee.

The largest Jeeps are getting larger for 2023. Jeep has officially unveiled the extended-length versions of its Wagoneer and luxury-trim Grand Wagoneer large SUVs, in advance of their public debut at the 2022 New York International Auto Show this week. The 2023 Jeep Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L are 12 inches longer overall and seven inches longer in wheelbase than their new-for-2022 regular-length counterparts, and will be powered by Jeep parent-company Stellantis’s recently unveiled Hurricane Twin Turbo 6-cylinder engines.
