The next model in Hyundai’s line of Ioniq electric vehicles is slated to go on sale in the coming weeks. The Ioniq 6 is a sedan that boasts more projected driving range and a lower starting price than the Tesla Model 3.

Like the Model 3, Hyundai’s offering will give buyers the choice of a single motor rear-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain configuration. The base rear-drive Ioniq 6 SE Standard Range is scheduled to go on sale this summer. It will start at $41,600 plus destination fee, use a 149-horsepower motor, and have an estimated driving range of 240 miles.
We expect most buyers will opt for one of the long-range models. An SE so equipped with rear-drive sees its motor upgraded to 225 horsepower, along with its range to 361 miles for a base price of $45,500. An additional $3,500 lets you add the dual-motor AWD system, which increases output to 320 horsepower but decreases range to 316 miles.
The rest of the lineup includes the SEL and flagship Limited. Each is available only with the long-range motor and rear- or AWD. Power output is the same, but their extra weight and standard 20-inch wheels (the SE has 18s) sees their driving ranges reduced to 305 miles with rear drive and 270 miles with AWD. Pricing ranges from $47,700 for the rear-drive SEL to $56,100 for the AWD Limited.
All Ioniq 6 models will support “ultra-fast” charging of 800 volts/350kW from a compatible power source, which Hyundai claims can juice up a battery from 10 to 80 percent in as few as 18 minutes. Among the standard features are a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The infotainment screen is the same size and includes GPS navigation along with Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto compatibility, though curiously only via a wired connection. Uplevel amenities like ventilated front seats, driver-seat memory, Bose-brand audio system, and a heated steering wheel are exclusive to the Limited grade.

CG Says:
With Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 receiving lots of accolades from the public and press (including a Consumer Guide Best Buy honor), expectations for this vehicle are understandably high. We have little doubt the Ioniq 6 will fulfill them. The 320-horsepower AWD variant has us the most intrigued, especially the SE variant, which promises all that power with a driving range that can still exceed 300 miles. We’re eager to get behind the wheel.
