Chevrolet is redesigning its entry-level SUV for the 2024 model year. The updated Trax boasts new sheetmetal, significantly larger dimensions, updated safety and convenience tech, and an aggressive starting price.

The first-generation Chevrolet Trax debuted in several worldwide markets in 2013, with the US receiving it two years later. While not the most exciting vehicle to drive, Trax won over buyers with a solid complement of features at comparatively cheap prices. Sales peaked in 2019 at more than 116,000 before falling more than 50 percent in 2021 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent vehicle shortage.
Chevrolet is hoping the second-generation Trax will revitalize sales. A version of this vehicle called the Seeker is currently on sale in China and South Korea. Like the related 2024 Buick Envista, Trax will be front-wheel drive only and use a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Those wanting all-wheel drive will need to buy Chevrolets other subcompact SUV, the Trailblazer, which itself gets a significant freshening for 2024.

Compared to the outgoing model, the 2024 Trax is 11 inches longer overall; 6 inches longer in wheelbase (distance between the front and rear axles); 2 inches wider; and 4 inches shorter in overall height. Passenger legroom increases by 3 inches, and cargo capacity grows by nearly 12 percent to 25.6 cubic feet with the rear seatbacks raised and 54.1 with them lowered.

Five trim levels are available, ascending through LS, 1RS, LT, 2RS, and ACTIV. LS and 1RS have analog gauges and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display. The others utilize a fully digital instrument panel and an 11-inch infotainment screen. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, though wireless smartphone charging is only available on the LT, 2RS, and ACTIV.
Other available features, depending on grade selection, include heated front seats and steering wheel, remote engine start, automatic climate control, and sunroof. All models include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision alert. Adaptive radar cruise control, blind-spot alert with rear cross-traffic detection, and rear-obstacle detection are part of an optional Driver Confidence Package.
Pricing for the 2024 Chevrolet Trax, including destination fee, starts at $21,495 for the LS; $23,195 for the 1RS; $23,395 for the LT; and $24,995 for the 2RS and ACTIV. As of this writing, vehicles are currently in transit to dealers.

The new Trax looks much better than its predecessor, and its extra passenger and cargo room should be much appreciated by potential buyers. Lack of all-wheel drive is somewhat disappointing but not entirely unexpected as Chevrolet needs some separation between Trax and Trailblazer. Well be very interested to see how it stacks up against other front-drive-only subcompact SUVs like the Hyundai Venue, Kia Soul, and Nissan Kicks.
