Honda is kickstarting its plan to sell 500,000 fully electric vehicles in North America by 2030 with the 2024 Prologue. The Japanese automaker has been slowly releasing details on this upcoming SUV, which it says will reside, “above CR-V and alongside Passport, offering generous passenger and cargo space,” according to a recent press release.

From what we’ve gathered so far, it seems development of the Prologue kicked off around the time the world first shut down for the COVID-19 pandemic. With everyone working remotely, designers and engineers turned to virtual reality technology to help pen the vehicle’s design, which the company calls “Neo-rugged.” Then in early 2022, Honda and General Motors announced a partnership to help bring affordable electric vehicles to the masses.

Prologue, like the upcoming 2024 Acura ZDX, will borrow its chassis and Ultium battery tech from GM. This will work as a stopgap solution until Honda has refined its in-house e:Architecture platform, slated to come online some time in 2026.

Designers made sure to give Prologue both visual and dimensional separation from the redesigned 2023 CR-V. While the narrow grille and headlights follow current Honda styling trends, the rest of the exterior is distinctive from its gas and hybrid sibling. Prologue’s 122-inch wheelbase, 192-inch overall length, and 78-inch width are 15, 7, and 5 inches greater than the compact-class CR-V, respectively, putting it closer to the midsize Passport.

The interior looks like it will be rather spacious. The instrument panel will be an 11-inch screen while infotainment duties will be handled by an 11.3-inch touchscreen.

Additional details and pricing for the Honda Prologue will be revealed closer to its on-sale date in calendar 2024.

CG Says

With Honda accelerating its timetable to sell more fully electric vehicles in the US by 2030, it makes a lot of sense for them to partner with another automaker to bring a product to market sooner so they can work on perfecting their own solution. Prologue’s design strikes a nice balance between futuristic and conventional, which should instantly give it mass-market appeal, especially if it’s priced aggressively.
