We have officially declared 2023 the year of the midsize pickup truck. So far, the 2023 GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado have launched. Then the 2024 Ford Ranger was revealed. Now, we have the 2024 Toyota Tacoma hitting prime time. And, the new Tacoma just might be the best of the bunch, with some segment-exclusive features, cool tech, multiple configuration options and powertrain choices and, a rugged new overlanding trim level. But, the biggest news for 2024 may be the number of powertrain options available for the Tacoma.

Returning are both two-door “XtraCab” and four-door “Double Cab” configurations. The Double cab can be fitted with either a 5- or 6-foot bed, while the XtraCab comes only with the latter. As for powertrain options, you may want to take notes:
For 2024 there are two engine options and two transmission options. This is where we start getting into some of the more exclusive options. The 2024 Tacoma will be the only midsize truck to offers either a hybrid powertrain or a 6-speed manual transmission.
The base engine is a turbocharged, 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder. In base SR models equipped with the 8-speed automatic transmission, the 2.4 delivers 228 horsepower and 243 pound-feet or torque. Equipped with the available 6-speed manual, those numbers jump to 270 and 310, respectively. In other trim levels, the 2.4-liter engine mates only to the automatic transmission, and delivers 278 horsepower, and 317 pound-feet of torque. Available on upper trim levels is Toyota’s i-Force Max hybrid engine. The turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 delivers 326 horsepower, and a stout 465 pound-feet of torque.
Making up for lost time, the 2024 Tacoma is available with a plethora of tech features. Essentially, all the equipment we’ve seen on redesigned Toyota vehicles—Crown and Tundra especially–is available on the Tacoma.
On the base end of the spectrum, you’ll see a 7-inch digital gauge cluster, 8-inch infotainment touch-screen display, LED headlights, push-button start, and Toyota’s new infotainment system. Upper trim-level features include a 12.3-inch gauge cluster, 14-inch infotainment screen, head-up display, an up-level JBL audio system with a removable portable Bluetooth speaker, heated-and-cooled seats, dual automatic climate control, and a heated steering wheel.

Two additional features you won’t see on another midsize truck: power running boards, and a power tailgate which can be retracted with a simple knee bump.

The 2024 Tacoma will be available in eight (yes 8) trim levels, with the new Trailhunter being arguably the coolest. The new top-tier Tacoma is meant for the overlanding crowd, and comes factory equipped with accessories designed to allow this midsize truck to “go far.”
Toyota worked with Australian-based ARB, a large distributor of off-road accessories, to co-develop the Trailhunter. So, you’ll see standard features such as 2.5-inch Old Man Emu-brand forged monotube position-sensitive shocks, a steel rear bumper, robust recovery points, a bed utility bar with removable Molle bed-side storage panels, 33-inch Goodyear Territory R/T tires, frame-mounted rock rails, and a high-mount air intake.
Pricing hasn’t yet been announced, but a basic trim breakout looks like this:
- SR: Available with in XtraCab and DoubleCab configurations and includes the 2.4-liter turbo, twin-tube shocks, leaf spring rear suspension, 17-inch wheels, 7-inch gauge cluster, 8-inch infotainment screen, LED lights. A manual transmission is also available on this trim.
- SR5: Available in XtraCab and DoubleCab configurations and includes the 2.4-liter turbo. It includes a multilink rear suspension on Double Cab models and 17-inch alloy wheels.
- TRD PreRuner: Available as XtraCab only and includes the 2.4-liter turbo. Available only with 2WD, the PreRunner comes with an electrically activated rear locking differential, and 17-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tires.
- TRD Sport: Available in Double Cab guise only, and has the 2.4-liter turbo as standard, but the i-Force Max hybrid V6 is available. The manual transmission is also available on this trim, but only with the four. It adds red TRD sport-tuned twin-tube shocks, 18-inch black TRD Sport wheels, hood scoop, black exterior badging, color-keyed door handles and over fenders, aluminum pedals and a 12.3-inch gauge cluster. The up-level JBL audio and portable speaker is available.
- TRD Off-Road: Available as a Double Cab only and has the 2.4-liter turbo as standard, but i-Force Max hybrid is available. The manual transmission is also available on this trim. It adds Bilstein monotube remote-reservoir shocks, MultiTerrain Select drive system, electronically activated rear locking differential, available front stabilizer bar disconnect, composite skid plates, available 33-inch tires and 17- or 18-inch black TRD alloy wheels.
- Limited: Available as a Double Cab only, and has the 2.4-liter turbo as standard, but i-Force Max hybrid is available. Full-time 4WD is also available with the i-Force Max powertrain. It adds an Adaptive Variable Suspension, chrome accents, color-keyed overfender and bumper trim, 18-inch chrome wheels, power running boards and tailgate, 14-inch infotainment screen, head-up display and heated-and-cooled seats.
- TRD Pro: Available as a Double Cab only and only with the i-Force Max hybrid powertrain. It adds 2.5-inch Fox internal-bypass shock absorbers, red TRD forged aluminum upper control arms, standard IsoDynamic performance seats, aluminum front skid plates, 18-inch TRD Pro alloy wheels, rocker protectors, two-tone roof, Rigid LED fog lamps, ARB steel rear bumper with red recovery hooks, auxiliary DC switches, and a 2400W AC inverter with 110-volt outlet.
- Trailhunter: Available as a Double Cab only, and only with the i-Force Max hybrid powertrain. It adds ARB 2.5-inch Old Man Emu forged monotube position-sensitive shocks with rear piggyback-style remote reservoirs, bronze-colored Trailhunter forged aluminum upper control arms, hot-stamped steel skid plates, 18-inch bronze-colored Trailhunter alloy wheels, Rigid-brand white/yellow switchable LED fog lamps, Trailhunter high-mount air intake, frame-mounted rock rails, Trailhunter bed utility bar, and integrated high-output in-bed air compressor.
The 2024 Tacoma will be assembled at both Toyota Motor Manufacturing in Baja California as well as Guantajuato, Mexico. The gasoline models will go on sale in late 2023, and the i-Force Max hybrid models will be available in the spring of 2024.
