Rolls-Royce Dawn Wood Trim
2017 Rolls-Royce Dawn with Full Canadel Paneling option package

The 2017 Rolls-Royce Dawn we recently had through the Consumer Guide head office had a lengthy list of optional equipment that pushed its $341,125 base price all the way up to a bottom line of $413,030. We’ll do the math for you…that’s $71,905 in options alone—enough to buy a very nicely equipped 2017 BMW 5-Series sedan.

The biggest line item on the list was the $27,630 Dawn Package USA option group, which adds “Dawn” treadplates, flawlessly embroidered “RR” logos on all four headrests, polished stainless-steel trim, active cruise control with stop and go capability, night vision with pedestrian recognition capability, and an astonishingly high-fidelity Rolls-Royce Bespoke Audio sound system.

The second-priciest option is a wood trim package. The Dawn’s “Full Canadel Paneling” interior treatment runs a spit-take-inducing $21,275—but this might be the wood trim package to end all wood trim packages. Have a gander in our pics below.

 Test Drive: 2017 Rolls-Royce Dawn

Rolls-Royce Dawn Upper Console
Canadel wood paneling spans the width of the Dawn’s dashboard. Though it’s not shown in this photo, the infotainment screen has a power-down cover that is perfectly grain-matched to the other dashboard wood, with a perfectly finished book-matched seam in the center.

Rolls-Royce Dawm Center Console, Wood
The forward center-console area has two slide-away doors covering the ashtrays and cup holders. As with the dashboard and rear-deck panels, the book-matched seams follow the centerline of the vehicle, and are utterly flawless.

ROLLS-ROYCE DAWN REAR-SEAT CONSOLE
The rear-seat console gets its own sliding covers. Note the angled drop-off at the leading edge of the forward door, and its crisp, perfectly honed character line.

The huge door trim pieces have an incredibly uniform concave shape…

All of the wood paneling has a low-gloss, incredibly smooth open-pore finish, When you contemplate the difficulty in sourcing attractively grained, blemish-free sections of exotic wood large enough to craft these finished trim pieces, and consider the incredible amount of highly skilled hand labor involved, that exorbitant price tag starts to make sense.

The Rolls-Royce Dawn’s Canadel wood paneling might be the ultimate “because we can” coachbuilding indulgence. Is there a better example of “craftsmanship for craftmanship’s sake” on a production vehicle than this?
