Toyota made a fairly ambitious move when it redesigned its Sienna minivan from the ground up for the 2021 model year. The company deep-sixed the Sienna’s long-standard 296-hp 3.5-liter V6 and put in its place a hybrid powertrain—a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder paired with electric motors for a total output of 245 hp. This move pushed up the Sienna’s starting prices a bit because of the added cost of the hybrid hardware, but gave Toyota a minivan that delivered standout fuel economy with almost no compromises in overall drivability and around-town acceleration.

For 2022, the Sienna model lineup gains a Woodland Edition model aimed at outdoor adventuring—it includes standard all-wheel drive; a slightly raised ride height for better ground clearance; and outdoor-oriented accessories such as a roof rack, tow hitch with 3500-lb capacity, and a 1500-watt inverter with a 120V AC outlet. Its special trim features include dark chrome accents, black badging, unique earth-tone seat stitching, and a choice of two body colors: Midnight Black Metallic or Cement (an industrial-looking gray that’s exclusive to the Woodland Edition in the Sienna lineup).

The Woodland Edition starts at $46,715 with destination, which puts it beneath the upscale Limited and Platinum models, but just above the sporty looking XSE model (our test-drive subject here), which starts at $44,225 with destination. We’ve previously tested a topline Sienna Platinum model; you can check out that report and our 2021 Sienna First Spin report for more information. As we mentioned above, the XSE is sporty looking, but that’s the extent of it. There’s no horsepower infusion or special suspension tuning, but a mesh grille, black exterior trim, red upholstery stitching, and unique seat trim give the XSE a slightly more caffeinated vibe inside and out. The XSE also comes quite nicely equipped—keyless entry and starting, heated front seats, four-zone climate control, and a power rear liftgate are among the standard features.

The XSE Plus Package adds the following features: black roof rails, Premium Audio infotainment system with a 9-inch touchscreen and navigation, 12 JBL-brand speakers with a subwoofer and amplifier, and a wireless charging pad (which is nestled in front of the center-console cupholders, in the middle of a handy storage shelf that spans most of the dashboard). The Rear Seat Infotainment System comes with a remote and two wireless headphones, and utilizes a 11.6-inch, 1080P HD display screen that flips down from the headliner.

With a much higher percentage of city driving than our Sienna Platinum test, we did a bit better in the fuel-economy department, averaging 36.3 mpg compared to 35.1—a shade better than the Sienna’s excellent EPA estimates.
