I mention the paint-supply issue because since then, auto buyers haven’t really had to deal with supply-chain issues, at least until COVID-19 changed everything.
As a result of COVID, and especially folks moving from offices to work-from-home situations, demand for laptop computers, smart phones, headphones, monitors, and other electronic devices surged, straining the world’s supply of microchips.
Anticipating slowing demand for vehicles, carmakers chose to back off production plans, and cut their contracts for components, including chips. As a result, chip production that would have been allocated to car making went instead to iPhones and desktop printers.
Counterintuitively, new-car demand slipped only marginally, and automakers were left scrambling to source components they had cancelled orders for, especially microchips.
You likely know the rest of the story: Automakers have not been able to meet demand for many models, and have resorted to producing mostly more-expensive products to maintain profitability. The result is a scarcity of the most-popular vehicles, and, in many cases, transaction prices above the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP).
The folks at iSeeCars, an online automotive marketplace, have analyzed transaction prices on their site, and have determined which vehicles are in the highest demand and commanding the greatest premium over MSRP. Presented here are the top five cars, per iSeeCars, currently going for the most money over sticker.
