Hyundai’s premium division unveiled a near-factory-ready concept vehicle at the 2023 New York Auto Show. The Genesis GV80 Coupe Concept offers a window into what a potential performance-oriented SUV from the brand might look like.

The GV80 Coupe Concept is a four-passenger vehicle that, if it sees production, would serve as a direct competitor to models such as the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe. Despite the “Coupe” moniker, the vehicle would have four full-size doors but a more aggressive rear roofline than a typical midsize SUV. The concept vehicle is instantly recognizable as a Genesis product with its prominent inverse pentagonal grille and thin-strip LED front lighting. One of the more interesting design details is said light pipes extend past the front wheel arches (filled with massive 23-inch rims) across the quarter panels. There’s a break at the doors before they pick up again across the rear quarter and liftgate.

Highly bolstered sport bucket seats are available for all occupants. Orange seatbelts and stitching to match the exterior paint scheme give the cabin extra visual flare. A black roll cage, which certainly would not be on a production model, is bolted behind the rear seats The infotainment/control setup largely mimics that of the GV80 you can buy today.

Genesis execs were mum on what would power such a vehicle. We do know that, despite a strong electric-only push from the brand, the concept relies fully on an internal combustion engine. It’s likely the same 375-horsepower 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 from the production GV80. If the Coupe gets the production green light, and this model is geared toward performance, then we wouldn’t be surprised to see it be available with the electrically supercharged 409-horsepower variant from the brand’s flagship G90 sedan.

Expect the company to use the New York Auto Show and other public appearances to determine customer interest, and if it’s strong enough, we could see a full-production model in the very near future. Given its sporty pretense, we would expect pricing to be slightly higher than that of the mainstream GV80.

CG Says:

Hyundai and Genesis have been on a roll with products that are resonating strongly with the press and buying public. Four Genesis models, including the GV60, GV70, G70, and G90 received Consumer Guide® Best Buy honors for 2023, the most of any premium automotive brand. Should the GV80 Coupe become available for consumers to purchase, it looks like it could be a very strong alternative to more established entries in the segment.
