When it goes on sale in January, the 2023 Honda Accord will become the newest vehicle to offer embedded Google applications. “Built-in” takes many Android Auto functions, including Google Assistant, Maps, and even the Play Store and allows drivers to access them without needing a connected smartphone.
The system relies on an embedded cellular data connection within the vehicle. With it, users can perform various commands with the “Hey Google” trigger phrase, including calling and texting, adjusting the climate control, and setting destinations with Maps. The Play Store will offer third-party applications like Spotify that can also be controlled with voice prompts.
At launch, Google Built-in will be exclusive to the 2023 Accord’s flagship Touring trim level. A Honda spokesman said the company plans to broaden availability in future models but did not elaborate on what those would be. If we had to guess, the upcoming Prologue EV will be an ideal candidate. The system cannot be retrofitted to other/older models either.
Since the system relies on a cellular data connection, there will be a subscription fee for continued access following an after-purchase complimentary trial. As of this writing, Honda has not finalized these details. However, we would expect the company to follow General Motors’ example with three years of service included then a monthly or yearly fee assessed afterward.

CG Says:
Google Built-in is an impressive piece of tech as it doesn’t require users to hook up their phones to perform most tasks that might otherwise require it. The biggest problem is going to be convincing buyers to continue paying for the service once their free trials have elapsed as they can just connect their phones and use more traditional Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. Hopefully Honda will offer a reasonably priced data plan with a discount if owners wish to pre-pay for a year in advance.
