The “hot-hatch” segment, for a longtime defined by Volkswagen’s enthusiast-beloved Golf GTI, is inarguably shrinking, in sales volume and in number of models offered. In fact, the whole small, sporty-car thing is in serious decline. Sadly, buyer attitudes have changed, and shoppers—especially young shoppers—seem to value utility over fun these days. I curse their pragmatism.

VinFast has its sights set on Tesla, Rivian, and other premium brands by offering a pair of battery-powered midsize SUVs. On their own, these vehicles might not merit much more than a casual shrug. Rather, it’s the company itself and a unique marketing strategy that has us taking notice.

I haven’t heard much about how “safety sells” in recent years. Automotively, we’ve moved on from safety—in general terms—to Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). ADAS systems include things like blind-spot alert, rear cross-traffic alert, pedestrian detection, and lane-keep assist. Really, stuff we should all be pretty good at by now—without help.

2023 Toyota Prius
Revealed at a private event in advance of the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show, Toyota officially unveiled the next version of its Prius gas/electric and Prius Prime plug-in hybrids. These fifth-generation hatchbacks get a sleek new look, a revised battery pack, and up-to-date safety and connectivity tech. The company also claims that the standard Prius hybrid will achieve 57 mpg in combined city/highway driving.
2024 Subaru Impreza RS
Revealed today at the 2022 Los Angeles Auto Show, the redesigned 2024 Subaru Impreza is noteworthy for what it gains, and for what it loses. Gone is an available manual transmission, and more significantly a sedan variant. Returning for ’24 is the sporty RS trim level. An RS version of the Impreza was last offered in 2007.
Fiat 500e Maitroppo Bulgari Concept
Down to just a single model in the U.S., the Fiat Brand is showing signs of life. Revealed today at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the 500e, an electrified version of Fiat’s 2-door subcompact hatchback, will return to the U.S. in early 2024.
