Last week, Ford launched the 2025 GTD, a limited-edition, ultra-high-performance version of its iconic Mustang sports car. The automaker says this radically styled coupe is the most potent street-legal pony ever, and it will carry a price tag to match.

According to the manufacturer, the Mustang GTD started development in 2021 by small team of dedicated engineers who came together in a metal storage garage, “…for a new, after-hours mission that on paper felt like an impossible dream: design a Mustang to take on the best of European sports cars.” The final product is a car built for the track that can also be used as a daily driver by well-heeled owners.
The GTD looks like no production Mustang ever. The design is like something out of a cyberpunk fantasy world with many sharp edges, vented hood, prominent front lip, and a massive rear spoiler mounted to the back C-pillar instead of its more traditional location on the trunk lid. Every crease has a purpose, though, and that’s to minimize wind resistance so it can go faster while maximizing downforce so the car can stay planted on the track.

Under the hood, you won’t find any electric/hybrid assist. It’s a straight-up internal combustion engine: a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 that puts 800 horsepower to the back wheels through a carbon fiber driveshaft to a rear-mounted 8-speed transaxle. The transversely mounted gearbox helps give the GTD near-50/50 front/rear weight distribution. Massive Brembo-branded carbon-ceramic brake rotors and high-performance pads help bring the vehicle to a halt. No performance figures were provided, but we have to think the car will accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3 seconds or less.
No interior shots were provided, but Ford says the GTD’s cabin materials will be a blend of suede, leather, and carbon fiber. Recaro-brand bucket seats will hold occupants in place. The rear bench was removed to save weight. While there will be multiple color combinations available, Ford says buyers can also customize the exterior paint finish to anything they wish.
The 2025 Ford Mustang GTD is expected to carry an eye-watering starting MSRP of $300,000. The total production run was not announced, but it will likely be limited to between 1,000 and 2,000 units with deliveries starting in late 2024/early 2025.

The GTD has a cool development story behind it, and it also looks like it will be an absolute tour de force on the track. At the same time, the Mustang has long had a reputation of being a “performance car for the people,” which is why the $300,000 asking price has us scratching our heads. Ford loyalists who are already own the company’s GT supercar will probably trip over themselves to put down a deposit on the GTD, but those who own the likes of the Ferrari 296 GTB or Lamborghini Huracan likely won’t give it more than a cursory glance.
