Gas Station Car Wash

It’s convenient, and relatively affordable, so, can I just drive through the gas-station car wash? The answer depends on your priorities, but generally, it’s okay for quick, basic cleaning—but less than ideal for long-term car care. Gas station car washes are convenient and cheap, especially if you get one free with a full tank of fuel, but they come with a few caveats.

Can I Use the Gas-Station Car Wash?

Some things to consider before driving your car or crossover through the $5.00 quick wash:

Pros:

  • Quick (often five minutes or less)
  • Affordable (generally less than $10)
  • Great for general salt/grime removal, or just a quick rinse

Cons:

  • Even “soft-cloth” washes can leave swirls and “micro scratches” in the paint finish
  • “Touchless” washes often fail to clean vehicles completely
  • Wheels rarely come clean

Potential Damage

A poorly maintain automatic car wash can result in damage to antennae, mirrors, trim, and aftermarket parts. Plus, automatic washes are generally not recommended for vehicles with matte finishes (check your owner’s manual for more information about special paint finishes.) Check reviews of the car wash you plan to use before paying the facility a visit.

New Cars

For new cars, many experts advise waiting or avoiding the car wash until the paint has fully cured (between 30 and 90 days).

Car Wash Alternatives

Hand Wash

There’s little more gentle than a hand-held sponge gently handled. Consult your owner’s manual regarding approve soap/detergent types.

Self Serve

Using a touchless spray nozzle may not always return the cleanest car, but the risk of paint damage is low.

Professional detailing

Periodic for deep cleans and protection–inside and out. Expensive, but generally worth the price. Consider visiting a detail shop at least annually.

Home pressure washer

Wonderful, if you have the time and equipment.

CG Says:

Use gas station washes sparingly for convenience. For regular care, invest in better options to keep your paint looking sharp longer.
