The Rivian R3 may arrive in U.S. showrooms as early as 2028, likely as a 2029 model. The electric subcompact crossover follows the R2 compact crossover and R1 midsize crossover and midsize pickup onto the Rivian roster. The R2 just became available for U.S. delivery, while R1—the EV startup’s first model—was introduced late in 2018 as 2019 models.
When Will The Rivian R3 Arrive?
Model Types
The R3 will initially be offered in two types:
R3

The more conventional R3 will closely mirror in mission its larger brand siblings, with four doors, 2 seating rows, and will be offered with a host of comfort and convenience features. Battery range in some trim levels is expected to exceed 300 miles. Note that there is a version of the R1S featuring 3 seating row.
R3X
The arguably adorable R3X could be Rivian’s first off-road oriented offering. That said, “X” versions of the R1 and R2 are in the works, one of which will like beat the R3X to market.
The R3X will feature more ride height and a wider stance than the base R3, along with special wheels and tires, and plenty of unique exterior and interior trim elements.
Reportedly, the R3X will also come standard with (or be available with) a tri-motor arrangement, featuring one motor on the front axle, and two on the rear. This setup will produce substantial power and likely, impressive acceleration.
Expect the R3X to return shorter battery-range estimates, this because of its greater weight, reduced aerodynamic efficiency due to the increased ride height, and tri-motor setup.
The R3X is expect to arrive before the conventional R3.
Production
While all Rivians are currently produced in Normal, Illinois, in a factory once operated by Mitsubishi, the R3 and R3X are scheduled to be the first of the brand’s models assemble at an all-new facility located near Stanton Springs, Georgia.
CG Says:
Thanks in large part to the arrival of the R2, Rivian’s 2026 Q3 sales results were the best in the company’s history. Still, at roughly $60,000 to start, the R2 maybe a little too pricey to reach mass-market status. We look forward to the R3’s arrival, and its rumored $40,000 starting price. Oh, and we think the R3X looks adorable.
