Review

Was a time when dads steered their daughters toward Toyota Corollas. The compact Toyota has a long history of reliability and strong resale value, and these attributes serve the purposes of protective dads well. Toyota’s bread-and-butter model was new for the 1969 model year, with a base price around $1700.

If the Corolla has (had) a demerit that might shake the confidence of a protective parent, it would be the lack of all-wheel-drive. For this reason, we suspect, many would-be Corolla buyers have moved on to small crossovers, such as Toyota’s own Corolla Cross.

AWD

But there’s good news for doting adults looking to guide their progeny into safety and security: The Corolla has been available with AWD since the 2000 model year. Why the availability of this popular feature seems to have been kept a secret we can’t say, but for the editors here at Consumer Guide—Chicagoans who struggle with snow on an annual basis—we are delighted by news.

Competition

There are two “catches” however: Going AWD means going hybrid (a good thing, actually), and it means paying about $30,000 for a small sedan. We’ll address the value situation presently.

For the record, of the eight non-luxury-brand compact sedans offered in the U.S. for 2026, only the Corolla, Mazda 3, and Subaru Impreza are available with AWD.

Sedan and Hatchback

For 2026, the Corolla is offered in two body styles: sedan and hatchback. While sportier in profile, the hatchbacks are not offered with either the hybrid powertrain, nor AWD. We’ll be talking exclusively about the sedan here.

Prices and Trim Levels

Here’s a look at the 2026 Corolla sedan trim levels:

  • LE ($24,320)
  • SE ($25,775)
  • LE Hybrid ($26,170)
  • SE Hybrid ($28,610)
  • XSE ($28,770)
  • XLE Hybrid ($30,535)

Going with AWD adds $1400 to the price of an LE or SE Hybrid; it is not offered on the topline XLE hybrid.

Engines

For 2026, standard Corolla sedans are powered by a 169-horsepower “Dynamic Force” 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. Hybrids feature a 138-horsepower 1.8-liter engine with hybrid assist. All Corollas come with a CVT-style automatic transmission.

Test Car

Consumer Guide recently spent a week behind the wheel of a 2026 Corolla Hybrid SE AWD Sedan in Underground (color). With the SE Premium package, our test car came to $31,677, including destination charge.

The $965 SE Premium package brings with it a larger touchscreen, enhanced audio system, and cell-phone charger. While it may seem a little pricey, we recommend the option, in part because its cost will be mostly recovered at trade-in time.

Cabin

Compared to the recently redesigned Nissan Sentra, or the Consumer Guide favorite Mazda CX-30, the Corolla cabin presents as tidy and functional, but it falls somewhat shy of being “nice.” There’s plenty of hard plastic lining the Corolla cabin, and what feels like a lack of accent trim. That said, the overall design is modern, and nothing comes off as cheap.

Connectivity

Control operation is simple and obvious, something that can be said about most Toyota models. The touchscreen was responsive, even in extreme cold, and the icons were easy to identify at a glance. Also, we’re always happy to see real knobs and buttons to engage the climate-control functions.

Room and Comfort

This big editor found plenty of space in the front row of the Corolla sedan, and easy access to said space via large door openings. Rear space is typical compact-car fare, though four adults should be comfortable even for long trips. Note that the Corolla sedan offers almost 5 additional inches of rear legroom than does the Hatchback.

Ride and Handling

Underway, the Corolla exudes a certain dynamic confidence that falls a little shy of genuine sportiness. The SE boasts a sport suspension which firms up the ride a bit, but overall comfort is not meaningfully compromised.

Power and Performance

Power from the hybrid setup is good, and though horsepower figures are lower for the Hybrid than the conventional Corolla, we found acceleration from a stop more than ample, though the engine itself isn’t entirely smooth sounding when pushed.

Fuel Economy

And while our fuel economy numbers fell a little short of the EPA estimates for the Corolla Hybrid, we did evaluate our test car during a period of historic cold here in Chicago. That said, we observed nearly 39 mpg in routine driving, which is impressive by any measure.

For a little less money, the LE Hybrid is an option for Corolla intenders looking for maximum fuel economy on a budget, but we found our well-dressed SE to be both functional and comfortable. And for Dads who still steer their children toward the presumed safety and reliability of the Corolla, we think the current edition of Toyota’s compact car is still a safe bet. And at $32,000 well equipped, the payments shouldn’t break the bank.
