2022 Volkswagen Golf GTI (left) and Golf R
Volkswagen announced complete pricing info for its redesigned 2022 Golf GTI and Golf R high-performance 4-door hatchbacks at the 2021 Chicago Auto Show. The ’22 Golf GTI and Golf R kick off the eighth generation of VW’s long-running compact hatchback in the U.S., and they are the only Golfs we’re getting… the non-performance versions of the Golf have been dropped for the American market and essentially replaced on our shores by VW’s new-for-2022 Taos compact crossover SUV.

The all-new 2015 Volkswagen Golf starts at $18,815 in limited-run Launch Edition trim. Shown is the all-electric e-Golf, due later this year.
In this case, being “over par” is a good thing.
Most Volkswagens have long occupied a gap between “regular” and “premium” nameplates in the areas of cost and refinement, and the redesigned 2015 Golf, GTI, and new electrified e-Golf are no exception. The only break from tradition is that there isn’t as much of a cost differential as there used to be. In fact, some model prices have come down significantly, despite the fact that their list of standard equipment has been lengthened and fuel economy has been improved.
First Spin: 2023 Toyota GR Corolla

2023 Toyota GR Corolla Morizo Edition
The “hot-hatch” segment, for a longtime defined by Volkswagen’s enthusiast-beloved Golf GTI, is inarguably shrinking, in sales volume and in number of models offered. In fact, the whole small, sporty-car thing is in serious decline. Sadly, buyer attitudes have changed, and shoppers—especially young shoppers—seem to value utility over fun these days. I curse their pragmatism.

1985 Toyota Corolla GT-S
Note: The following story was excerpted from the October 2021 issue of Collectible Automobile magazine.
Perhaps one of the most unexpected automotive icons of the Eighties is Toyota’s humble Hachi-Roku, Japanese for “8-6.” This nickname refers to Toyota’s AE86 model code for the top 1600 GT APEX performance version of the Japanese-market 1983-1987 Corolla Levin and closely related Sprinter Trueno. (The latter is a pop-culture star for its central role in the Japanese street-racing manga Initial D). Lesser known is the pair’s American-market cousin, the 1985-87 Toyota Corolla GT-S. It’s the AE86 we want to wring out for Cheap Wheels.
First Look: 2023 Toyota GR Corolla

2023 Toyota GR Corolla
Today Toyota unveiled a rally-inspired high-performance version of its Corolla compact car—the 2023 GR Corolla—at an event in Long Beach, California. When it arrives later this year, the GR Corolla will be available in a base Core model. A limited-production Circuit Edition will join it in 2023, and it will be available for the 2023 model year only. The GR branding is used globally to identify Toyota’s sports cars—the letters stand for Gazoo Racing, which is Toyota’s in-house motorsports operation.
