Review
My week in the 2026 Nissan Sentra came as the Chicago area endured an astonishing period of rainfall. And in part, that precipitation is my excuse for the quality of the pictures seen here. At some point, just before my test car was to be taken away, I settled for the only rain-protected shelter I could find that offered some degree of natural light. My apologies to you, and Nissan.

Funny thing about terrible weather–you really appreciate your vehicle when its protecting you from Mother Nature’s worst. And on several occasions during that water-soaked week, I found myself especially appreciative of the Sentra’s welcoming and roomy cabin—and not just because I was warmand out of the rain.
Safe Harbor

Metaphorically, the Sentra offers not just a fine looking and comfortable cabin in which to escape the weather, but protection from the economic storm Americans are now seeking shelter from.
Car Prices
As a result of high-value and unpredictable tariffs, carmakers have begun dropping lower-margin vehicles from their U.S. lineups. Nissan has, for example, dropped the Versa, the last American-market car model with a starting price below the $20,000 threshold. Other makers are eliminating base models, effectively raising the price of cars by limiting choice.
Around $30,000
And, as I sat in the Sentra one damp and dreary day, I realized that not only was Nissan’s new entry-level model surprisingly comfortable and well finished, it was also among the last vehicle that can be loaded with convenience and technology features for just $30,000. Well, in Consumer Guide’s case, just over.
New for 2026
Nissan’s most-affordable offering was significantly updated for 2026, and was treated to updated exterior styling, an ungraded cabin featuring new display tech, and more muscle under the hood.
Prices and Trim Levels

For 2026, the Sentra trim-level lineup looks like this:

The S model more-or-less takes over where the discontinued Versa left off, while the SL treats driver’s to a legitimately premium experience for what is now economy-car money.
Engines
Power for all Sentra variants comes from a 149-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine mated to a CVT-style automatic transmission. All Sentras are front-wheel drive, and run on regular-grade gasoline.

Consumer Guide recently spent the week behind the wheel of a 2026 Sentra SL in Imperial Bronze. Including destination charge, our test car came to $30,375.
Classy Cabin
And, about that weather-proof cabin that kept me dry all week, the updated Sentra boasts interior appointments that are anything but entry level. Yes, the $20,000 car is gone, but the $30,000 car is so much nicer. Nissan employs generous helpings of high-grade materials to line the cabin, and everything appears carefully assembled.
We found the digital interface easy to use. The touchscreen is bright and uncluttered, and inputs are responded to immediately.
Room and Comfort

Cabin dimensions expand ever so lightly for 2026, but the previous generation Sentra was already quite roomy for the class. This large editor found plenty of leg and shoulder space once seated in the driver’s spot, and entry and exiting were both easy enough thanks to large, wide-opening doors.
Rear seat space is perhaps slightly better than average for the segment, and we think most adults will find sufficient room when not situated behind an especially tall front-row occupant.
Power and Performance
Underway, the Sentra impresses with smooth, progressive power delivery, and reasonable verve from a stop. While no powerhouse—and definitely down on power compared to the Honda Civic or Mazda CX-3—the Sentra gets along just fine, though the engine can sound course in rapid acceleration.
Fuel Economy
And though the Sentra comes up short in drag races, it does make excellent use of a pricey commodity: gas. In mostly routine driving that included some warm-up idle time, our test car returned just over 30 mpg. With gas prices climbing as they have been, the Sentra’s frugality should be considered a plus.
Ride and Handling
The Sentra has matured somewhat over the years, and now feels well planted and comfortable at highway speeds. The notion that what is now Nissan’s smallest U.S.-market sedan might not make for an excellent long-drive conveyance is misguided. This is a very quiet and comfortable long-drive small sedan.

Handling is willing and predictable, though our drivers stopped short of calling the Sentra sporty. That said, there’s plenty of control in corners, and strong, direct-feeling brake action.
Value
If, for you, the concept of safe harbor goes beyond just being warm and comfortable, and indeed includes making purchases that won’t break the bank, we suggest taking a very long look at the Sentra. A 2026 Consumer Guide Best Buy, the Sentra offers considerable refinement for the money, and all the utility an individual or even small family might need.
