Review

Unlike the compact crossover segment, which Toyota dominates, the subcompact crossover category is more of a free-for-all.

While the Japanese maker’s RAV4 is, by far the best-selling compact crossover—and the nation’s best-selling non-pickup truck—the smaller Corolla Cross does sales battle with a collection of excellent alternatives, and must settle for only mid-pack sales volume.

Subcompact Crossover Sales

Through the first half of 2026, the small-crossover sales chart looks like this:

Subcompact Crossover Prices

Please note the strong relationship between each model’s base price, and its position in the sales rankings:

  • Chevrolet Trax — $23,495
  • Nissan Kicks — $23,925
  • Chevrolet Trailblazer — $25,095
  • Toyota Corolla Cross —$26,930
  • Honda HR-V — $27,950
  • Subaru Crosstrek — $28,415 (standard AWD)

Make of the data what you will, but the Chevrolet Trax is the least expensive vehicle listed here, and it’s the best-selling. Meanwhile, the Corolla Cross is among the priciest options here, and only a mid-pack seller.

Hybrid Appeal

You’d think that the Corolla Cross, being the only vehicle in the segment offered with a hybrid drivetrain, would be extra popular, especially now with gas prices at historic highs. But blunting the hybrid’s appeal is the fact that every car on this list—save for possibly the Subaru—will average better than 30 mpg in routine driving, blunting the appeal of the Toyota’s pricier drivetrain. That said, our test Corolla Cross was surprisingly fuel efficient.

Monthly Payments

We think that some of the Corolla Cross’s sales problem is psychological. With young shoppers facing both inflation and stagnant wages, car shopping to hit a monthly payment is a common practice. And the hot-selling Trax, with even a little bit of negotiating, can be had for around $400 a month. This when financed for 60 month at 7-percent, and with 20 percent down. Meanwhile, the least-expensive Corolla Cross comes in at $460 under the same conditions. And, if you’re tired of having two roommates and eating Ramen several times a week, that $60 probably looks like a pretty big deal.

Empty Nesters

All that said, the Corolla Cross has a lot to offer the right customer, which is someone looking for something small and efficient, but also well equipped. Maybe an empty nester rather than a first-time buyer. And with that in mind, let’s have a look at the 2026 Corolla Cross.

Corolla Cross Prices and Trim Levels

As noted above, the Corolla Cross is the only vehicle discussed here offered with a hybrid powertrain. As you might expect, the hybrids can get pricey relative to other small crossovers. Here’s a look at the 2026 Corolla Cross trim level lineup:

Non-hybrids

  • L ($26,930)
  • LE ($29260)
  • XLE ($31,855)

Hybrids

  • S $31,390
  • SE $32,710
  • XSE $35,425

Question: Why does Toyota substitute Ss for Ls in it’s hybrid trim-level names? We have no idea.

Engines

All non-hybrid Corollas are powered by a 169-horsepower 2.0-liter engine mated to a CVT-style automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, AWD is a relative bargain at $1300, regardless of trim level. The CVT features a “stepped” first gear, which helps the transmission feel like a conventional auto in around-town driving. In our testing, this feature is very effective.

The hybrid drivetrain also features a 2.0-liter engine, this one mated to 3 electric motors for a combined 196 horsepower. Automatic transmission and AWD are standard.

Changes for 2026

For 2026 all Corolla Cross models are treated to a number of updates, including a new front-end treatment, an available black roof (very trendy), new Calvary Blue paint (seen here), a newly available Cold Weather Package on some trim levels. Inside the ‘Cross features a redesigned center console, and an available 12.3-inch touchscreen in place of an 8-inch unit.

Test Car

Consumer Guide recently spent some time with the 2026 Corolla Cross in topline hybrid XSE trim. Including a number of options and the destination charge, our Cavalry Blue test car came to $37,524—a big number relative to the base prices listed above, but there is a lot going on here.

Cabin

The cabin looks clean and modern and generally feels roomy. That said, while everything inside the Corolla Cross looks well put together, the small crossover trails the segment in terms of materials quality and general “pizzazz.” Note that there’s noting wrong with the cabin design, it just isn’t as nice as, say, the Kicks interior, or as high-style as that found in the Trax. Also, a simple volume knob on the console or near the touchscreen would be nice.

Connectivity

The infotainment system is easy to use however, and the new, larger touchscreen is put to good use. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as is a wireless device charger and satellite radio.

Room and Comfort

While the cabin is roomy enough, we were surprised by the Corolla Cross’s doors, which did not open fully to 90 degrees, complicating entering and exiting the little Toyota. That said, the Corolla Cross will accommodate four adults for an extended drive, providing the rear-seat occupants are less than 6 feet tall.

Ride and Handling

Underway the Corolla Cross impresses with class-leading ride comfort. Indeed, the crossovers road isolation matches that of larger and pricier vehicles. Handling, too, is solid, giving the vehicle a lively feel.

Quietness

Road and engine noise, however, is not well squelched, though no one would call the Corolla Cross loud. The engine can sound “burly” pulling away rapidly from a stop, the some my actually find the drivetrain’s aural feedback appealing.

Power and Performance

The hybrid drivetrain, as noted above, delivers considerably more power than the conventional system, and helps the Corolla Cross make easy work of pulling away from a stop and expressway merging. Throttle response is excellent, making easy work of stop-and-go driving.

Fuel Economy

Most impressive was our off-the-charts (literally) fuel economy. The EPA awards the Corolla Cross Hybrid a combined 42 mpg, we observed—and yes we doubled checked—49 mpg. We don’t recall being especially gentle with our test car, but the weather was mild, so our air-condition use was limited. That said, the Corolla Cross is not the first Toyota Hybrid to return better-than-EPA-estimated fuel economy in our car.

Mazda CX-30

Not on our competitive-set list is the Mazda CX-30, a charming small crossover which, offers a much nicer cabin than the Corolla Cross, and is more fun to drive, but cannot match the Toyota’s ride comfort, passenger space, or fuel economy.

We mention the CX-30 to demonstrate the extremes found in this category. We think shoppers looking to hit a monthly payment price point will want to focus on the Chevrolet Trax or Nissan Kicks.

Value

Consumers who value efficiency, power, reasonable rear-seat passenger space, and AWD—which cannot be had on the Trax—will be well served by adding the Corolla Cross to their test-drive short list.

And no, at $37,000, the Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE isn’t priced to woo entry-level shoppers trying to keep their payments around $400. But, it is a great deal for a value-minded consumer looking for an affordable hybrid crossover.

We heartily recommend going with the hybrid Corolla Cross. Per the EPA’s annual fuel-cost estimates, the hybrid system will pay for itself in less than five years, and it brings more power to the table. Plus, as discussed here, the hybrid options will bring a great deal of value at trade-in time. It’s really a win/win feature.
