Quick Spin

Performance variants are nothing new in the automotive space. When a vehicle proves popular, manufacturers are quick to introduce extra power, capability, and/or luxury, aiming at enthusiasts who always seem to want a little bit more.

More poise, more power, (much) more money

Ford is following that familiar formula with the 2026 Mustang Dark Horse SC, a supercharged flagship that pushes the iconic pony car well beyond its established roots. To get a sense of what this latest high-performance model is capable of, Ford invited us to the legendary Road America circuit in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, to stretch the Dark Horse SC’s legs.

Specs

The standard Dark Horse employs a tuned version of Ford’s venerable 5.0-liter V8 engine producing 500 horsepower (up from the GT grade’s 480-486). Torque and transmission options remain unchanged at 418 pound-feet along with a 6-speed manual or 10-speed automatic, respectively. The Dark Horse SC ups the ante with a derivative of the supercharged 5.2-liter V8 from the F-150 Raptor R and $320,000+ Mustang GTD. In this application, the engine makes 795 horsepower, 660 pound-feet of torque, and teams with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that delivers shifts in 80 milliseconds, which is faster than the blink of an eye. No manual gearbox is available, which will certainly be to the chagrin of at least some part of the car’s target audience.

A carbon fiber driveshaft is designed to reduce rotational weight, add strength to handle the engine’s extra power, and improve throttle response. Variable traction control allows the driver to dial in how much they want the system to intervene, including an option to disable it entirely. Other things you can adjust are the steering response, exhaust mode, and the firmness of the magnetic suspension dampers.

An optional Track Package, which we expect most buyers to opt for, adds 20-inch carbon fiber wheels that reduce unsprung weight by 150 pounds, carbon ceramic brake rotors, an adjustable rear wing, and “front splitter wickers,” which help direct airflow around the vehicle at high speeds to help keep it more stable on the track.

Performance

Our test drive was conducted exclusively in a controlled environment, consisting of low-speed autocross and high-speed track driving. According to a Ford Racing team member, a primary goal for the Dark Horse SC was to create a Mustang that didn’t “do Mustang things.” By that he meant addressing public and press criticisms of the stock’s vehicle’s tendency to feel heavy and squirrely in performance scenarios while simultaneously retaining daily-driver livability.

From our limited time behind the wheel, which did not include any street driving, we’re reasonably confident Ford met those goals. We would call the Dark Horse SC “deceptively fast.” Floor the throttle from a stop and you while you may not feel absolutely pinned to your seat, you’ll be in triple digits sooner than you might realize.

Straight-line performance has never been an issue for the Mustang. Rather, it’s the car’s handling response–the previously mentioned squirrely behavior and ponderous feeling. We’re pleased to report the Track Package-equipped Dark Horse SC models we tested managed Road America’s many twists and turns with the utmost confidence. On the autocross with traction control completely disabled, it never felt like the back end would get away from you. On the track itself, the vehicle was stable and predictable, with lively, communicative steering. The carbon ceramic brakes with massive Brembo-brand calipers erased speed without drama, fade, or vague pedal feel, even after repeated laps.

Pricing

The 2026 Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC packs a considerable punch, and that includes what it will do to your bank account. While the standard Dark Horse checks in at a semi-eye-watering base price of $67,075 (including $1,995 destination fee), the SC gallops right past that to a stratospheric $108,085. The Track Package will set you back another $36,500. Choose the 2026-exclusive Special Edition, which gets you the Track Package, red and carbon fiber exterior accents, and 3D-printed titanium shift paddles, and you’ll need to cough up $176,310.

CG Says:

Based on our limited but revealing track time, the 2026 Ford Mustang Dark Horse SC is an exceptionally capable machine. The Ford Racing team has crafted a vehicle that feels composed, confidence inspiring, and tremendously fast, while addressing many of the handling criticisms that have followed the car for decades. The bigger question isn’t whether the SC delivers the goods but if enough buyers will be willing to pay for it.

With a starting price above $100,000 and well-equipped models pushing that figure much higher (not to mention dealers adding their own markups), the Dark Horse SC doesn’t compete with traditional muscle cars. It’s going squarely against performance benchmarks including the Chevrolet Corvette and Porsche 911. Heavily optioned versions begin to encroach on territory occupied by even more powerful supercars like the 1,064-horsepower Corvette ZR1 as well as offerings from premium and exotic brands such as Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin. There’s also the matter of Ford’s own parts catalog, which includes a $10,500 co-branded Whipple supercharger package that pushes the standard Mustang GT and Dark Horse past 800 horsepower without voiding your warranty when installed by an authorized party.

We expect Ford and Mustang faithful to line up in droves, but whether the Dark Horse SC has enough cachet to attract buyers who might gravitate toward other established performance and luxury marques is more difficult to answer.
