The Tesla Cybercab is a purpose-built, fully autonomous two-seat electric vehicle designed specifically for taxi service in Tesla’s ride-hailing network. – What is the Cybercab?

What is the Cybercab?

Autonomous Taxi Cab

The Cybercab is not fitted with a steering wheel, floor pedals, or side mirrors, instead, it was engineered from its inception for use as an unsupervised “Level 4autonomous vehicle with no human controls.

The Cybercab is a two-passenger coupe with a minimalist interior, large center screen, and a hatchback body for easy cargo stowage and access.

Power and Range

The front-drive Tesla taxi is powered by a single 219-horsepower electric motor mated to a 48-kWh battery. Range is EPA estimated at 293 miles.

Efficiency

Per Tesla, the Cybercab is the most energy efficient the company builds, requiring just 165 Wh of energy to travel a single mile. That’s slightly better than 6.0 miles per kWh. Industry observers generally consider 5.0 miles per kWh to be an efficiency benchmark.

Charging

Tesla has promised that the Cybercab would be made available with wireless charging, though the feature does not yet appear to be available on the vehicle.

Rollout

Tesla unveiled the Cybercab concept at the maker’s “We, Robot” event in October of 2024. Elon Musk positioned the purpose-built cab as an affordable, high-volume vehicle that could transform mobility by enabling owners to generate revenue through the network. That functionality may be a long way off.

Retail Sales

Note that private-party sales of the Cybercab are not immediately forthcoming, as the state-by-state laws governing the operation of autonomous vehicles generally do not permit their use outside of maker-directed test programs such as Tesla’s Austin, Texas operation. Operation of autonomous cabs—built by any company—is generally limited to approved “geo-fenced” areas that are specially mapped for that purpose.

Gigafactory Texas

Pilot production of the newest Tesla began at the company’s Austin “Gigafactory Texas” in February 2026, with volume production starting around April 2026. Production is expected to be slow for the remainder of 2026.

Cybercab Price

It was Elon Musk’s stated goal that the ‘Cab retail for around $30,000. As sales so far are between one division of Tesla to another, retail pricing has yet to be established, though as noted above, private-party sales of the vehicle are not imminent, as the laws governing the use of fully autonomous vehicles of public roads are not yet in place.
