Review
While the world goes hot-sauce crazy, I feel it’s my job to remind foodies that Tabasco is still here, and it is still the benchmark for tasty, pourable heat. So, sure, sew your wild oats, experiment with the Mexican stuff (Cholula, Tapatio), or the overrated regional stuff (Crystal, Franks)—they’re all good. But don’t forget to make your way home to the measured, flavorful, rewarding goodness that is original Tabasco.

Original Premium Small Electric Crossover
And though launched as recently as the 2023 model year, the Lexus RZ serves as an excellent grounding point for premium electric crossovers, serving up just enough style and spice, while remaining practical and even affordable.
The compact RZ disappointed somewhat at launch, with limited range that was diminished further by the addition of AWD—a thing which crossover shoppers order more often than not.

RZ Updates for 2026
The stylish Lexus enjoys a number of under-the-skin updates for 2026, most of which help to improve battery range and/or up the power numbers a bit. Here’s a briefly look at the updates:
-

2026 Lexus RZ 500e F Sport in Wind Base front-wheel-drive RZ 350e (previously RZ300e) up 20 horsepower to 221 (range up to 301 miles)
- AWD RZ 450e range improves by 40 to 261 miles (remains 308 horsepower)
- New sporty RZ 550e F Sport rated at 402 horsepower (with 196-220 miles of range)
New Batteries
The gains in power and range outlined above come in part from new, higher-capacity batteries, which increase in capacity from around 71 kWh to 75 kWh for 2026. The high-performance RZ 550e is fitted with a unique 77-kWh battery.
Here’s the 2026 RZ trim-level lineup:
- RZ 350e ($47,395) (FWD)
- RZ 350e Premium ($49,595) (FWD)
- RZ 450e ($50,895)
- RZ 450e Premium ($53,095)
- RZ 550e F Sport ($58,395)
- RZ 450e Luxury ($58,395)
RZ 550e F Sport versus RZ 450e Luxury

It’s worth noting that though the RZ 550e F Sport and RZ 450e Luxury come in at the same price, they are very different vehicles. While the sporty F Sports comes equipped with go-fast equipment, the Luxury focuses on passenger comfort.
Here are a few key areas in which the F Sport differs from the luxury:
F Sport: More Power
Higher-output powertrain: 402 total system horsepower versus 308
F Sport: More Responsive
Sport-tuned suspension: Specially retuned dampers and springs for a flatter, more stable ride. Includes Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) for better coordination of stability and traction systems.
F Sport: Unique Drive Mode
M Mode (Interactive Manual Drive): Features paddle shifters for virtual 8-speed manual shifting. System simulates gear changes with power output control, shift feel, and sounds for a more engaging EV driving experience.
F Sport: Aggressive Design
Distinctive black F Sport accents: F Sport emblem, front grille, front/rear bumper moldings, and unique rear spoiler.
F Sport: Wheels, Tires, and Brakes

Specific 20-inch alloy wheels with aero covers. Optional blue brake calipers.
F Sport: Cabin Trim
Specific F Sport seats: “Ultrasuede”-trimmed with blue contrasting.
Test Car
Consumer Guide recently spent a week behind the wheel of a 2026 RZ 550e F Sport in Wind (color). All told, our test car came to $62,034, including destination charge.
Here we’d like to look at five cool things about the RZ in F Sport trim:
Hot Interior
The RZ serves up an interesting blend of cabin materials, including premium-look “Ultrasuede” door insets and rich “NuLuxe” vegan leather. We found the synthetic materials especially premium in feel, as we did the dash and console surfaces.
And despite its trim exterior dimensions, the RZ provides plenty of space for four full-size adults.
Spicy Drive Experience

We’ve lamented often enough that Lexus crossovers never handle as well as advertised. That said, the RZ in F Sport trim comes close. It’s not edgy or overly precise feeling, but it does plant nicely on on-ramps, and there is a reasonable amount of steering feel. Even hustling the RZ around town comes with a certain amount of satisfaction.
Refined-Palate Highway Cruising
Like every Lexus—the RZ is an excellent highway long-haul conveyance. Credit the quiet cabin, smooth ride, and (see below) outstanding Mark Levinson audio system,
Secret-Menu Audio Indulgence
Given how expensive some premium-vehicle upgrade auto systems can be, it’s refreshing to find Lexus’ excellent Mark Levinson audio setup made available as part of a $2600 option package. We find the systems to be clean and accurate, if maybe a little wanting for warmth. Regardless, the Mark Levinson stereo (do we still call them stereos?) is an excellent outfit, and well worth the money–if you care about your music.
Tasty Value
With a starting price of around $43,000, and a loaded F-Sport price of around $60,000, the RZ represents solid value in the premium small crossover EV segment–the kind of spicy value you return to after looking around. The compact Mercedes-Benz EQB starts around $53,000, while the BMW iX3 and Cadillac Optiq begin around $52,000. Obviously, how you equip your vehicle will play a major role in its final price.
So sure, play around with the other “hot” compact crossover EVs, and see if they hit the spice level you’re looking for. We’re inclined to recommend the RZ as one of the original vehicles of its type, and because it’s also among the most reliably impressive—a little bit like Tabasco.
