Review

Let me get the bad part out of the way up front, the Mazda CX-30 is:

  • A little expensive
  • Tight on space
  • Not as fuel efficient as the other vehicles in this class

The Downside

But if you are looking for something sporty, luxurious, and solid feeling, Mazda’s smallest crossover may appeal to you. I like the CX-30 so much, that I encouraged by daughter to buy one, which she did.

The Competition

That said, we heartily recommend the Chevrolet Trax for sheer dollar value and practicality, and the excellent Nissan Kicks for content, cabin accommodations, and real-world fuel economy. And, the Corolla Cross Hybrid for anyone looking to extract the most possible from their gas budget.

Prices and Trim Levels

For 2026, the CX-30 trim-level lineup looks like this:

  • 2.5 S ($27,970)
  • 2.5 S Select Sport ($29,655)
  • 2.5 S Preferred ($31,285)
  • 2.5 S Aire Edition ($31,845)
  • 2.5 S Carbon Edition ($33,025)
  • 2.5 S Premium ($35,135)
  • 2.5 Turbo Aire ($36,005)
  • 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus ($39,495)

New Trim level

Though the CX-30 is little changed for 2026 (and less changed for 2027), there is a lineup swap. Mazda has added the new 2.5 S Aire Edition to the middle of the lineup, and has replaced the 2.5 Turbo Carbon Edition with the 2.5 Turbo Air towards the top of the lineup. We’ll be talking more about the Turbo Aire in a moment.

Engines

Again for 2026, All CX-30 models come with standard AWD and a 6-speed automatic transmission. The 2.5 S trim levels are powered by a 186-horsepower 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine runs fine on regular-grade gas.

The 2.5 Turbo Aire and Turbo Premium Plus feature a turbocharged 2.5-liter four, which produces 227 horsepower when running on regular gas, and a stout 250 horsepower when fed a diet of premium. Using regular gas is just fine with Mazda, and will not compromise your warranty.

Test Car

Consumer Guide just spent a week behind the wheel of a 2026 CX-30 Turbo Aire in Deep Crystal Blue Mica. Our test car came to $36,005 including destination charge.

Gender Neutral

The now-discontinued Carbon Turbo featured upholstery and cabin appointments in red and black tones, which were handsome, and arguably masculine. The gray tones in the Aire, and even the “Aire” name likely represent a shift on the maker’s part to increase the little crossover’s appeal to women.

Fit and Finish

Regardless, the Aire, like all CX-30 trim levels, presents as premium, with top-level interior materials, apparently excellent build quality, and a general sense of solidity that adds to the crossover’s luxury feel underway.

Controls and Connectivity

Though the brand’s redesigned CX-5 compact crossover is not equipped with Mazda’s rotary-knob style control system, the CX-30 still is, and, frankly we still love it. Though it will take some time for those new to the brand to acclimate to the setup, we find it simple to use while the vehicle is in motion, and generally accommodating under any circumstance.

Room and Comfort

Front seat space is ample for folks under 6-foot tall. Taller folks will find exiting and exiting the little Mazda something of a hassle, and room in general a little scarce. The rear seat is best left to youngster.

Power and Performance

Underway, the CX-30 shines, with classy leading power, smooth operation, and handling that favors drivers looking for an enjoyable commute. The turbocharged engine is generally smooth, sounds a little snarky when pushed, and is always ready to move out. The alert 6-speed automatic transmission smoothly, but with authority.

Fuel Economy

In routine driving that favored city use, we averaged just under 24 mpg. While that fuel-economy figure is fine by absolute standards, it does trail the other vehicles in this class, many of which touch 30 mpg with careful use.

Ride and Handing

The CX-30 ride is best described as comfortably firm, and maybe a little aggressive for some drivers. We appreciate the sense of control that comes with a sporty suspension setup, and the CX-30 delivers on that front, along with precise, hefty-feeling steering and strong brakes. Once settled in at highway speed, the CX-30 feels relaxed, with a reasonably quiet cabin, and none of the dartiness some smaller vehicles may exhibit on the freeway.

Value

At $36,000, the Aire Turbo is no bargain, but it is an affordable premium-feeling small crossover that feels like a strong value given the level of content, classy cabin, and overall sense of craftsmanship.
