2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe

If you were one of the dozen or so people who found themselves inexplicably drawn to Steven Bochco’s HBO series “John From Cincinnati,” you understand what happened to the Pontiac Solstice Coupe.

2008 Saturn Astra

Too little, too late? Imported from Europe, the Astra was meant to help lift the Saturn brand upmarket.

By now, you know the story. In a post-apocalyptic haze, driven by Wall Street pundits, the UAW, and the federal government, General Motors killed three brands in one fell swoop. Just like that, Hummer, Pontiac, and Saab were transformed from viable sales channels to discount retailers, peddling their remaining inventory in limited variations and at steep discounts.

2009 Hummer H3T

General Motors wasn’t the only company to have its financial frailty exposed by the 2008 financial meltdown, but it was among the corporate giants that very nearly didn’t survive the crisis.  Saddled with more brands than Mike and Carol Brady had kids, it became clear that Sophie’s Choice-level decisions needed to be made.

Pontiac’s sported-up version of the Chevrolet Aveo didn’t last long in U.S. showrooms. The plucky 5-door hatchback was only available as a 2009 model.

First seen in 2005, the GM Daewoo-developed T250 architecture played host to more models than you can shake a stick shift at. The humble subcompact platform’s global family included the Daewoo General and Kalos, Holden Barina, Suzuki Swift, and the ever popular, produced under license, ZAZ Vida.

2019 Buick Regal TourX, 2019 Buick Regal Sportback, Last Buick Station Wagon

Buick Regal TourX

Buick Regal TourXNote: The following story was excerpted from the June 2021 issue of Collectible Automobile magazine.

It’s a cliché to say it’s the end of an era, and it’s still difficult to believe, but Buick is technically out of the car business. That’s right; every 2021-model Buick in the U.S. market is a crossover SUV. Perhaps more surprising, the last Buick cars weren’t the marque’s famously all-American four-door sedans. Rather they were the 2020 Regal Sportback and Regal TourX wagon.

Dealer Addendum Sticker, Window Stickers, Markup, Dealer Markup

Dealer markup sticker on a 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Series III

It’s no secret: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the related supply-chain issues, new-vehicle transaction prices have shot upward over the last couple years. Stories of jaw-dropping dealer markups—especially for popular vehicles—are now commonplace… so much so that some sort of markup on a new vehicle is more or less the rule, rather than the exception. On a recent Sunday road trip through Western Illinois, I came across a small-town Dodge-Chrysler-Jeep-Ram dealership with a few brand-new vehicles on its lot, so I decided to do a little boots-on-the-ground research. What I found was this: This particular dealer is asking full sticker, full sticker plus $5000, or full sticker plus $10,000 for the new vehicles it has in inventory. And, there isn’t very much in inventory.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe

Consumer Guide Automotive

There’s no moss growing under the feet of Jeep engineers and product planners these days. About a year ago, the brand introduced its first plug-in-hybrid vehicle: the Wrangler 4xe. Approximately 30,000 units found buyers last year, which Jeep says makes the Wrangler 4xe (pronounced “four by e”) America’s best-selling plug-in hybrid. Last summer, the fifth generation of Jeep’s Grand Cherokee debuted with the all-new 2021 Grand Cherokee L—the first Grand Cherokee with three rows of seats. Late last year, a redesign of the traditional two-row, five-passenger Grand Cherokee was introduced on a shorter version of the L’s all-new unibody platform. That’s all history now—along with the equally new Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer full-size SUVs—and Jeep’s engineers are on to their next act: the 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe. It’s an intriguing mix-and-match that combines the Wrangler 4xe’s powerful plug-in-hybrid powertrain with the redesigned Grand Cherokee.

New Yrok Auto ShowThe largest Jeeps are getting larger for 2023. The 2023 Jeep Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L are 12 inches longer overall and seven inches longer in wheelbase than their new-for-2022 regular-length counterparts, and will be powered by Jeep parent-company Stellantis’s recently unveiled Hurricane Twin Turbo 6-cylinder engines.
