5 Coolest Concept Cars of the 50s

Lincoln Futura
By Frank Peiler–Publisher, Collectible Automobile magazine
My first visit to the Chicago Auto Show happened in 1953, when I was 12 years old. Before then, I had to rely on the huge auto-show sections in Sunday editions of the three newspapers my family subscribed to: the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Daily News, and Chicago Sun-Times. I vividly recall pawing through the 1951 auto-show sections for every picture I could find of the Buick XP-300 and the only car that really amazed me, the LeSabre. It was then that I resolved to attend the auto show in person—as soon as I could persuade someone to take me.

Volkswagen CrossBlue Concept
Volkswagen gave attendees of the 2013 Detroit Auto Show a look at two concept cars that might very well see production in the near future.
Headlining its press conference was the CrossBlue SUV concept. If it were to see production (which we think is highly likely at this point), it would rival the GMC Acadia, Honda Pilot, and Mazda CX-9 among 3-row, 7-passenger “large-midsize” crossovers. Though physically larger than the premium-midsize Volkswagen Touareg, a vehicle based on the CrossBlue would be less expensive.

A proposal for a multi-cylinder Cadillac was completed in 1961. It had a sweeping roofline reminiscent of Cadillac’s fastback coupes of the late ’40s.
Cadillac’s V16 of the 1930s is fairly well known, as is its 2003 Sixteen (as in V16) concept car. But what is not generally known is that Cadillac toyed with the idea of a 16-cylinder car in the 1960s.

Buick Wildcat EV Concept
This week Buick took the wraps off a dramatically styled pure-electric concept car and also announced that it is committed to becoming a fully electric brand by the end of the decade. Buick says it will bring its first all-electric vehicle to market by 2024, and that future Buick EV products will use a brand name from Buick’s past: Electra. Buick also unveiled a redesigned version of its familiar tri-shield logo, and says the new emblem will debut on its production vehicles starting next year.
