Longest Lasting Vehicles

2019 GMC Yukon

Is 200,000 miles the new 100,000 miles? Maybe not, but the number of vehicles reaching the 200,000-mile mark seems to be on the rise. According to the analysts at vehicle-retail site iSeeCars.com, just under one percent of all cars, crossovers, SUVs, and pickup trucks will go that distance–presumably to the delight of their owners.

Longest Cars of 1988

1988 Lincoln Town Car Cartier

Life is full of ironies, many of which go sadly overlooked. One ironic condition I tolerate—well, loathe, actually—is the fact that my new big screen TV requires a certain amount of boot-up time before I can watch anything. I find that excruciating, pre-entertainment pause a strange throwback to the era of mom “warming up” the set before the family would settle in to watch Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom.

1979 Cadillac

Cadillac’s DeVille and Fleetwood models only rank 5th on our list of the longest rides of 1979.

In this, the last installment of our “Hard to Park” series, we fully see the impact of downsizing on the overall lengths of some of our favorite Seventies machines. For 1979, Chrysler launched its redesigned “R-Body” sedans, each almost a foot shorter than the vehicles they replaced.

1977 Lincoln Continental, Longest Cars of 1977

Stretching 233.0 inches, the Lincoln Continental was one of the longest passenger vehicles of 1977.

A funny thing happened on the way to Eighties: Cars got shorter. The “shortening” of the American automobile didn’t happen all at once—it came in staggered bursts, as individual manufacturers downsized the platforms that underpinned their largest cars.

1973 Oldsmobile 98, Longest Sedans

Stretching 230.3 inches stem-to-stern, the Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight ranks 3rd on our list of the longest sedans of 1973.

As a follow up to our Hard to Park: The Longest Cars of 1975 blog post, we looked back two years further, to 1973. As it turns out, the average car on our 1973 list is almost an inch and a half shorter than those on our ’75 list (231.4 inches versus 232.9), but the longest single car is a ’73 model.

Electric Pickup Trucks in Profile

The fact that there are multiple “EV startups” vying for a foothold in the American auto market in 2022 underscores an important reality: Times of turmoil and change often offer points of entry for new players in a given industry. Think about it.

1975 Chevrolet Caprice Estate wagon

After a year of cancelled car shows due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s lots of pent-up energy and interest around the 2021 car-event season—car lovers are anxious to get out of the garage and back to their favorite shows and cruise nights. One of our favorite summer “super shows” is the Goodguys Heartland Nationals at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, IA. One of the longest-running events on the Goodguys schedule (this year’s edition was the 30th annual), the Heartland Nats always takes place on the weekend closest to the 4th of July, and regularly draws more than 4000 vehicles. This year’s show enjoyed record-breaking participation: almost 5000 registered vehicles filled the spacious fairgrounds facility.

2000 Isuzu Hombre

The year 2000 resonates for me, because it was the year in which I became a dad. Automotively, this meant selling my beloved Acura Integra and buying something more practical, in this case a Nissan Maxima SE. Nice car, the Maxima.
