In the early Seventies, after low-lead gas and rising insurance costs put the kibosh on the original muscle-car era, a number of car lovers turned their creative attention to vans. While the early adopters of the era did most of the custom work on their vans themselves, it wasn’t long before automakers realized they could sell “custom” vans right from the factory.

The “cruising van” era lasted for most of the Seventies, but seems to have climaxed right around 1976. Shared here are five classic ads from that time. If you owned a custom van of some sort, tell us about it—if you have pictures, all the better. And if you feel that vans like these should be equipped with a CB radio, click here.
