Overview

There are currently three EV models in the growing Genesis lineup, two of which are in the popular small-crossover segment, the GV60, and the GV70 Electrified. The third model, the G80 Electrified, is a midsize sedan, a luxury segment that doesn’t enjoy the love it once did. That is a shame, as the G80 EV ranks among our favorite electric luxury vehicles.

2023 Genesis G80 Electrified

Unlike the GV60, which is a stand-alone EV model, the G80 Electrified is a battery-powered version of the impressive G80, which is powered by either a 4-cylinder or V6 gasoline engine.

And, unlike the conventional G80, which is available in three trim levels ranging in price from about $50,000 to about $66,000 to start, the Electrified is offered only in a single, unnamed, very-well equipped trim. Our test car came to $81,495 including the destination charge and extra-cost Capri Blue paint. AWD is standard. No other options are available.

Drivetrain

Power comes from a pair of electric motors which combine to produce 365 horsepower. The standard and only battery has a reported capacity of 87.2 kWh, good for an EPA estimated 282 miles of driving range. And, if you have access to high-speed public charging, the G80 Electrified battery can be brought from a 10-percent charge to an 80-percent charge in just 22 minutes.

You can read our complete review of the G80 Electrified in an earlier evaluation. Worth noting: There are no changes planned for the 2024 Genesis G80 Electrified. Here we’d like to highlight five cool things about the GV80 Electrified we think you might appreciate. Here’s the list:

Upper-Crust Luxury

2023 Genesis G80 Electrified

It may seem counterintuitive to suggest that an $80,000 sedan represents good value, but the G80 Electrified does just that. We’ve said this before regarding Genesis cabins in general: The interior of the G80 would not disappoint in a Bentley or Rolls-Royce. Not only are the materials almost embarrassingly opulent, but the assembly quality is apparently top notch as well.

Grand-Touring Performance

2023 Genesis G80 Electrified

While the G80 Electrified is not truly sporty, it is rewarding to drive, in the classic grand-touring tradition. There’s ample power, responsive steering, and better-than-average handling. Even though the G80 features a useful rear-seating area, it would not be wrong to consider it a modern-era Lincoln Mark V or Cadillac Eldorado. Except that the G80 handles so much better than those cars did.

Seriously Comfortable

2023 Genesis G80 Electrified

This author is a big man, and while the front door openings of the G80 are just a little small for him, the in-cabin experience is top notch. In addition to the generally luxurious appointments, the seats are both coddling and long-haul supportive. Additionally, outward visibility in every direction is excellent, reducing commuting stress. Plus, the Lexicon audio system is so good music lovers will look for excuses to hit the road.

Best-Possible EV Experience

2023 Genesis G80 Electrified

With 282-miles of EPA estimated range, and a 187-kW charge rate, the G80 Electrified is among the better performing luxury EVs available today. Though there are Hyundai/Kia EVs that will charge more quickly, Genesis claims the G80 will go from a 10-precent state of charge to 80 percent in just 22 minutes. And, and this is key, this electric Genesis is quick and smooth operating, enhancing the overall premium-car experience.

Avant-Garde Design

2023 Genesis G80 Electrified

Love it or hate it, the G80 looks like no other car on the road. The consensus seems to be love, however. Both inside and out the G80 looks sporty, premium, and substantial. A word of warning: Strangers in parking lots will ask you about your car. Until more G80s hit the road, you will be acting as an unpaid Genesis brand ambassador.
