2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS

2007 Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS

Thanks in large part to Chevrolet’s involvement in NASCAR racing, the somewhat anachronistic Monte Carlo outlived its useful life span by half a decade or so. By 2000, the mainstream-brand midsize/large coupe segment was all but gone, with only the coupe versions of the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry (dubbed Solara) still seeing meaningful sales volume.

Instead of fumbling with task of explaining the concept of aerodynamics myself, I will simply lift some copy from the Porsche 924 ad seen below. Per Porsche:

Nissan’s 370Z traces its heritage back to the Fairlady Z, the car that made its American debut as the 1970 Datsun 240Z at the 1969 New York Auto Show. To celebrate a half century of the Z-car, Nissan prepared a 50th-anniversary package for the 2020 370Z Sport hatchback coupe and introduced it at the 2019 New York International Auto Show.

Cheap Wheels

Note: The following story was excerpted from the December 2019 issue of Collectible Automobile magazine.

Chevrolet performance models are often named after their esoteric option codes that start with the letter Z. We’d guess that most everyone reading this will immediately know what Z28 or Z06 means in the context of the Camaro and Corvette. A smaller group may remember the Cavalier Z24, and somebody must recall the Beretta Z26. For this installment of Cheap Wheels we’ve tapped into another of Chevy’s lower-profile “Z” machines, the 1991-1994 Lumina Z34.

Arguably the most famous Mustang of all is the dark-green 1968 Mustang GT fastback that Steve McQueen’s character Lieutenant Frank Bullitt drove in the 1968 motion picture Bullitt. Ford celebrated that iconic car with special-edition Bullitt Mustangs in 2001 and again in 2008-09. For 2019, Ford has released a third Bullitt Mustang, and like the others, it’s our choice for a future collectible.

Cheap Wheels

Note: The following story was excerpted from the October 2019 issue of Collectible Automobile magazine.

The fifth—and final—generation of the Honda Prelude made its American debut as a 1997 model. The sportiest of these final Preludes was the Type SH, and we think it makes an interesting choice for the historically minded enthusiast seeking cheap wheels.

Among the seemingly countless tragedies and hardships that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought upon the world this year, the upending of the normal American summertime car-show season ranks relatively low on the list. Still, it hurts to have so many car shows, car races, cruise nights, and other automotive gatherings either cancelled outright or postponed.

1984 Chrysler Fifth Avenue

It’s a maxim, a song title, and something your friends might have tried to tell you before a blind date: It’s what’s inside that counts. For a car dealer trying to maneuver a would-be car buyer into a test drive, it’s all about the cabin experience.

I don’t know why this surprised me, but my daughter has no idea what UHF TV channels are … or more correctly were.

I just turned 55, and well recall the TV channels of my youth. I grew up in Chicago, and available to us in the Seventies and Eighties were CBS (channel 2), NBC (channel 5), ABC (Channel 7), popular local WGN (channel 9), and our area public-television affiliate WTTW (channel 11).
