Note: The following story was excerpted from the June 2020 issue of Collectible Automobile magazine.

The first two generations of the Toyota Supra were well-equipped, long-wheelbase, six-cylinder variants of the Celica hatchback. Then in 1986, the two cars went separate ways. Celica transformed into a sporty front driver, and Supra went off on a new rear-drive sports-car platform. It’s that first Celica-free Supra that we think would make for a nice set of cheap wheels.

Nissan’s Infiniti luxury brand made its debut more than 30 years ago at the 1989 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The first dealers opened the following November, selling just two models. The M30 coupe was based on the Japanese-market Nissan Leopard, but Infiniti’s star was the larger and all-new Q45 sedan.

From the Pontiac Grand Prix’s 1962 introduction through 1989 it was exclusively a two-door car. That changed with the addition of four-door sedans for 1990. More-door GPs continued through 2008, but perhaps the most interesting one of them all came from that inaugural season: the little-remembered STE Turbo.

Chevrolet performance models are often named after their esoteric option codes that start with the letter Z. We’d guess that most everyone reading this will immediately know what Z28 or Z06 means in the context of the Camaro and Corvette. A smaller group may remember the Cavalier Z24, and somebody must recall the Beretta Z26. For this installment of Cheap Wheels we’ve tapped into another of Chevy’s lower-profile “Z” machines, the 1991-1994 Lumina Z34.

Note: The following story was excerpted from the October 2019 issue of Collectible Automobile magazine.

The fifth—and final—generation of the Honda Prelude made its American debut as a 1997 model. The sportiest of these final Preludes was the Type SH, and we think it makes an interesting choice for the historically minded enthusiast seeking cheap wheels.

A Pontiac fixture since 1957, the Bonneville abandoned rear-wheel drive for its 1986 redesign. The big Pontiac was restyled again for ’92, and it’s in this second-generation front-drive Bonneville where we find our latest Cheap Wheels choice, the racy 1992-99 SSEi.

Note: The following story was excerpted from the June 2019 issue of Collectible Automobile magazine.

The 1993 Dodge Intrepid was one of Chrysler’s LH-platform front-wheel-drive large sedans that introduced trendsetting “cab-forward” styling and helped make the company one of the decade’s design leaders. A second-generation Intrepid wearing a more dramatic interpretation of the cab-forward look arrived for 1998, and a performance-flavored R/T version was added for 2000.

Dodge performance history has largely been shaped by muscular V8s and smoking rear tires, but don’t forget the handful of turbocharged four-cylinder front-drivers. Memorable machines like the Omni GLH and Neon SRT-4 remain enthusiast favorites, but we’d like to look at a more recent Dodge “hot hatch,” the Caliber SRT4.

If our readers were asked to rank Toyota Corolla traits, we’d guess sportiness and enthusiast interest would fall pretty far down the resulting list. Still, there have been Corollas capable of piquing a cheap-wheeler’s curiosity, and we think the 1987-88 FX16 GT-S “hot hatch” is one of the cars from this subset.
