2017 Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen Alltrack
Volkswagen showed off an SUV-flavored all-wheel-drive version of its recently introduced Golf wagon at the 2015 New York Auto Show, and announced that it would go on sale in the U.S. as a 2017 model. The Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen Alltrack follows the formula of other “SUV-ified” wagons such as the Audi allroad, Subaru Outback, and Volvo XC70.

Look for crisper styling on Volkswagen’s next-generation compact wagon
By Chris Poole
The U.S. market’s last mainstream-brand station wagon is redesigned with crisper styling, a new gasoline engine, less weight, and a bit more room. No longer a Jetta, the compact SportWagen is based on VW’s latest Golf hatchback and should be even more appealing.

2012 Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen
Station wagons may be a hard sell in SUV-crazy America, but Volkswagen isn’t giving up on them. A recent Car and Driver online report quotes Rainer Michel, product-strategy director for VW of America, as saying the front-wheel-drive Jetta SportWagen will be redesigned for 2014, the first complete re-do for this model since it was reinstated for 2008 after a few years furlough. Not only that, Michel says the company is thinking of adding an all-wheel-drive quasi-SUV version along the lines of the Alltrack concept from last April’s New York Auto Show.

Consumer Guide Publisher Tom Appel learned to drive stick in a 1977 Ford Pinto nearly identical to the one seen here.
I learned to drive a manual transmission in 1982. I was in something of a hurry to do so, as I had just started working at a service station and was not keen to admit to my boss or any of the mechanics there that I could not operate a three-pedal vehicle. It was just assumed that I could, and I meant to meet that expectation.
Funny story about learning to drive stick…
