Last year Ford sold around 20,000 vehicles to law-enforcement agencies. While the number may seem huge, it’s dwarfed by many of Ford’s retail models. The Ford Escape small crossover, for example, accounts for nearly 30,000 sales every month.
Still, there are plenty of reasons for a car company to court the law-enforcement community. First, police-car buyers tend to be loyal, returning for the same models year after year—this to reduce the cost and complexity of fleet maintenance.
Also, having cars in a police fleet is good advertising. Nothing says a car or truck is rugged and dependable more than being selected to endure the rigors of law-enforcement service.
Finally, law-enforcement vehicle purchases are dependable. Even if the economy slows down, police still work—and drive. So even if the public is pulling back from new-car purchasing, makers can count on law-enforcement business to help gird sales and production.
