Like it does every October, the Mecum Auctions road show rolled in to the Schaumberg Convention Center in Schaumberg, Illinois, late last month. As usual, the Mecum Chicago event boasted its share of big-ticket, six-figure classics—the top seller of this year’s show was a rare Calypso Coral 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429 (pictured below) that went for $275,000.
Widely celebrated “A-list” cars like that Boss 429 are always a treat to see, but in addition to the expected blue-chip classics, the typical Mecum auction also draws a broad array of off-the-beaten-path vintage vehicles that are just as interesting (if not more so) to our eyes. Pair that with the very wide range of eras on display—from the teens all the way up to the present day—and these auctions stack up to be one heck of a car show that offers something for most any auto enthusiast, even if you’re not in the market to buy.
